Re-Staging Of 'Miyako Island Journey' Announced For June 2025

Former Shiki actress Kumie Arakawa brings back her heartfelt musical with new content and flare.

Japanese musical theatre is set to welcome back the heartfelt production "Miyako Island Journey - Listening to Your Voice" with its re-staging planned for June 26, 2025. Created, directed, and starring former Shiki Theatre Company actress Kumie Arakawa, this poignant musical captures the essence of family bonds, human growth, and love, centered around the beautiful backdrop of Miyako Island.

The first performance took place at Shiodome Bloomood in October 2024, marking the introduction of this evocative piece. The story not only resonates with audiences but delves deeply, weaving together themes of marital love and parental relationships, making it relatable and powerful.

Following enthusiastic feedback from the audience and numerous requests for another performance, Arakawa and her team have revamped the musical with new songs and expanded storylines, promising to deliver the upgraded "Miyako Island Journey" experience. The production will be held at the Koga Masao Music Museum's Keyaki Hall, located at 3-6-12 Kamiyama-cho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo.

On performance day, the afternoon show will start at 3:00 PM after doors open at 2:30 PM, and the evening show will commence at 6:45 PM following 6:15 PM doors opening. Ticket sales, priced at 8,000 yen including tax, will kick off on February 28 at 6:00 PM through Ticket Pia.

The narrative of "Miyako Island Journey" follows the emotional experiences of four family members during their travels and their struggles relating to each other. A male passenger boards the airplane bound for Miyako Airport, unknowingly mirroring events from five years prior. He encounters memories of his wife, who had deeply cherished the island, as the story flashes back to their family trip. The dynamics between the father—a hesitant, bumbling second-generation family business owner—and his daughter, who dreams of being a musical actress, drive the plot. Their struggles with connection culminate as familial bonds are re-forged amid adversity.

Kumie Arakawa, after completing her studies at the Tokyo University of the Arts, has had significant impact on Japan's musical scene, performing over 2,000 times as roles such as Shiloh and Jellylorum-Griddlebone across various productions.

With her experience and insights, Arakawa has cultivated numerous budding artists and actors through her workshops, lectures, and original productions. Her dedication to fostering talent and storytelling through music has earned her as much admiration as her performance career.

Co-starring with Arakawa is Takeshi Matsubara, known for his roles in major musicals like "Les Misérables" and "Death Note". Not only is he recognized for his stage presence but also for his vocal talents which he showcased on popular themes for programs such as "Ultraman Cosmos".

Another formidable presence is Hiyori Kanoko, who brings her unique healing voice to the performance, reflecting the character of their daughter. Kanoko is acclaimed for her performances across various stage productions, including "The Wonderful World of Oz" and "Bye Bye Birdie".

Meanwhile, Mayuri Kayama, contributing her extensive experience from JAL as an international flight attendant, will portray the role of the cabin crew. Her training background contributes greatly to the performance's authenticity, ensuring through her expertise the portrayal of exceptional service.

Rounding out the cast is Yoko Ishikawa, who will take on piano accompaniment, bringing the performance to life with her music, also directing her YouTube channel aimed at sharing her performances and tutorials.
