Among those affected was Sophia Tung, who decided to take action after suffering sleepless nights due to the incessant honking. She set up a 24-hour livestream dubbed “LoFi Waymo Hip Hop Radio Self Driving Taxi Depot Shenanigans To Relax/Study To,” showcasing the comical chaos happening just below her apartment window.
"2 a.m. or 5 a.m., the cars would come back or go to charge, and they would get congested on the lot and start honking," Tung explained, describing her nighttime frustrations. The stream gained traction, pulling desired national attention to what residents were experiencing.
Even Waymo executives started to take note. Vishay Nihalani, Waymo's Director of Product and Operations, joined Tung on her livestream to directly discuss the issue with the community.
Nihalani acknowledged the complaints, stating, "Waymo has every intention of being a great member of the community. We are aware of the disturbance caused by our vehicles." He proceeded to elaborate on the honking, which is intended as a safety feature to avoid collisions, particularly when the vehicles are interacting with human-driven cars.
