A sassy little walrus calf, found neglected and seemingly abandoned by her herd, is now in safe hands at a nonprofit wildlife response center in Seward, Alaska. The young Pacific walrus, weighing in at approximately 165 pounds, made the long journey from Utqiagvik, about 800 miles away, to receive vital care. Upon arrival on July 22, 2024, medical technicians conducted an examination that revealed the calf was malnourished, dehydrated, and characterized by superficial wounds on her body. The origin of these injuries remains a mystery.
The unexpected rescue was prompted when local hunters reported seeing a walrus herd in the vicinity of where the calf was located. Kaiti Grant, a spokesperson for the Alaska SeaLife Center, expressed cautious optimism about the calf's recovery. Just under a year before, the center had experienced the unfortunate loss of another walrus calf, which had died after dealing with several significant health challenges related to nutrient absorption.
"The loss of that calf last year was a devastating experience for our team," Grant stated. "But now, we’re hopeful about this new patient, who is only the 11th walrus we’ve cared for in our 26-year history. It’s a rare situation and a chance for us to apply what we have learned." Currently, the calf is adapting well to bottle feeding—a critical sign of progress. "Because walrus calves take comfort from physical contact with their mothers, our staff is providing round-the-clock care, ensuring she feels safe and secure," Grant added.
