Renowned Singer Roberta Flack Passes Away At 88

The legacy of the R&B icon continues to influence generations of musicians and fans alike.

Roberta Flack, the iconic American singer known for her powerful voice and soulful melodies, passed away on February 24, 2025, at the age of 88. Reports from various sources indicate she died from heart failure during transportation to the hospital, after having battled amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for the past three years.

Flack was born on February 10, 1937, in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Her musical talent was evident from a young age; she began singing in church and took up piano lessons when she was just nine years old. She later attended Howard University on scholarship, where she studied music and aimed to become a classical pianist. Yet, upon realizing the limited opportunities for Black women in the classical music scene, she shifted her focus toward popular music.

Flack started her career as a music teacher, but by the late 1960s, she had begun performing at clubs, eventually drawing attention from notable figures such as Bill Cosby and Woody Allen. Her debut album, First Take, was released by Atlantic Records in 1969. The album contained the hit song "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," which became widely popular and was later featured in Clint Eastwood's directorial debut, Play Misty for Me.

Throughout her career, Flack garnered numerous accolades, including four Grammy Awards for her most recognizable hit, "Killing Me Softly With His Song," released in 1973. That song not only topped the charts but also won Flack her first Grammy for Record of the Year. She followed up with other hits, including "Feel Like Makin' Love" and "Where Is the Love?" demonstrating her ability to blend R&B with elements of pop and jazz.

Flack's music transcended generations, with her soulful ballads remaining relevant long after their initial release. The Fugees' 1996 cover of "Killing Me Softly With His Song" introduced her work to a new audience and revitalized interest in her original recordings.

Beyond her musical achievements, Flack was dedicated to philanthropy, particularly focused on providing free music education to underprivileged children. Her commitment to enriching the lives of young people through the arts was recognized throughout her career, and she participated actively in various charitable initiatives.

Even as ALS began to take its toll on her ability to perform, Flack remained engaged with her craft, contributing to artistic projects including children’s books and documentaries. Her documentary, Roberta, was released in November 2022, showcasing her life and legacy. Just recently, she published her children's book, The Little Green Piano, in 2023, demonstrating her enduring love for music and storytelling.

Flack’s passing has sent ripples throughout the music industry, with many artists and fans mourning the loss of one of R&B's most distinguished voices. "We are heartbroken to hear about the passing of the brilliant Roberta Flack. She passed away peacefully surrounded by family," remarked her representative, underscoring the deep impact Flack had on those around her.

Roberta Flack's legacy is not just defined by her chart-topping songs and accolades but also by her role as a trailblazer for Black women in music. Her blend of elegance and strength inspired countless musicians and fans alike. She will be remembered not only for her beautiful voice but also for her powerful messages and her contributions to social causes.

With more than 13 Grammy nominations to her name, Flack leaves behind not only her music but also her son, Bernard Wright, continuing the family’s artistic legacy. The world of music has lost a true pioneer, but her melodies will continue to resonate with audiences for generations to come.
