Renowned Gynecologist Giovanni Scambia Passes Away

A prominent figure in gynecological oncology, Scambia continued to work until the end, leaving behind a legacy of care and dedication.

Professor Giovanni Scambia, renowned gynecologist and director of the scientific foundation at Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli, has passed away at the age of 65. A leading figure in gynecological oncology, Scambia continued to work even after being diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer.

Born on December 25, 1959, in Catanzaro, Italy, Scambia's esteemed career began after graduating with top honors from Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. He served as the head of gynecology at the Gemelli Hospital, where he made significant strides and authored numerous studies presented at major international conferences.

Despite his serious illness, Scambia remained dedicated to his work, touching the lives of many women throughout his career. His tireless commitment to his patients was recognized by many, including Simona Loizzo, deputy of the Lega party and health committee leader, who expressed her sorrow upon learning of his death. “He was a great doctor, one of the best gynecologists in Europe. I mourn him as a friend and as someone from Calabria,” stated Loizzo, recalling their long-standing friendship and his instrumental role during significant moments of her life, including the birth of her child.

Loizzo emphasized Scambia's contributions, noting he gave prestige to Calabria and served as a reference point for many women facing health challenges.

Francesco Rocca, president of the Lazio Region, also acknowledged the extensive loss felt within the medical community, stating, “With Giovanni Scambia, Italian healthcare loses a luminary of gynecological oncology. He accompanied many women through their suffering with great competence and humanity. My condolences go to his family and the scientific community at Gemelli.”

Luisa Regimenti, regional councilor, added her thoughts, saying, “With the passing of Professor Scambia, we lose a pioneer of ovarian cancer research and excellence of the Italian academic world. His expertise and humane values were greatly appreciated by institutions and those who benefited from his care.”

The impact of Professor Scambia’s work extends far beyond his personal achievements; his commitment inspired generations of practitioners, researchers, and countless patients. His passing has left a void, but many reflect on the lived experiences he enriched and the advocacy he championed.

A Head of Gynaecology Oncologica at Policlinico, Scambia was actively involved until recently, demonstrating his passion for advancing women’s health. His contributions to clinical practice and research have paved the way for enhanced treatments and services provided to patients suffering from gynecological cancers.

To honor his legacy, the community is organizing a charity event on February 24 at the Auditorium Parco della Musica “Ennio Morricone” in Rome, featuring the evening “Note di luce. Quando la musica illumina,” hosted by Carlo Conti. The event is aimed at raising funds to support clinical and research activities within the gynecology oncology department at the Gemelli Hospital. This fundraising effort speaks to the impact of Scambia’s work and the collective desire to continue his mission.

The night promises to be both uplifting and poignant, as attendees come together to celebrate Scambia’s life and legacy, reinforcing the community’s commitment to advancing gynecological health.

Professor Giovanni Scambia’s legacy will undoubtedly live on through each life he touched, each breakthrough he championed, and the unwavering spirit of healthcare professionals dedicated to following his path.
