Renewed Search Begins For Beaumont Children

New evidence links key suspect to decades-old disappearance as excavation targets former foundry site.

A renewed search for the Beaumont children, who disappeared more than 50 years ago, has commenced at the former Castalloy foundry site, bringing new hopes and renewed scrutiny to one of Australia’s most enduring mysteries. Jane, Arnna, and Grant Beaumont vanished without a trace on January 26, 1966, during their day out at Glenelg beach, sparking South Australia’s largest search and rescue operation. Despite extensive investigations over the years, their fate remains unknown.

This latest search effort, organized by Independent MP Frank Pangallo, follows the emergence of new evidence linking Harry Phipps, the main suspect, to the case. According to Pangallo, it has come to light through familial connections—specifically, claims from relatives—suggesting Phipps was related by marriage to the children’s family. "That hasn’t been previously known and it’s another link in this case," he told the Adelaide Advertiser. "It shows Mr. Phipps could have known the Beaumont kids and the family. It’s another piece of circumstantial evidence pointing to him being the prime suspect."

The excavation began soon after investigators moved large earthmoving equipment to kick off the preliminary digging. Phipps allegedly kidnapped, murdered, and buried the children at this site, where Pangallo emphasized the urgency of this search, calling it the last opportunity to conduct thorough excavations before the area is developed for industrial or residential purposes.

Pangallo, who was present at the site along with forensic archaeologist Maciej Henneberg, former detective Bill Hayes, and author Stuart Mullins, highlighted the significance of revisiting the former factory’s grounds. The dig will revisit two previously excavated areas and include a new location never searched before. The search is expected to take about one week.

The Beaumont children’s mysterious disappearance captivated the nation, with their parents, Jim and Nancy Beaumont, reporting they left home with sixpence but were last seen buying pasties and meat pies with much larger amounts of money. This discrepancy led investigators to expand the scope of their search and to continually reconsider various leads through the years.

The case has been marked by countless theories and investigations. Phipps, who passed away in 2004, has long been central to these theories. Before his death, one chilling detail emerged from interviews with his son, Haydn, who claimed to have seen three children at their family home shortly after the disappearance. Haydn also revealed his history of abuse by Phipps, adding layers of complexity to the case.

This isn't the first time the Castalloy site has been examined. Police previously excavated the site twice, once following claims made by two brothers about digging a grave-sized hole at the factory three days after the children vanished. The second site examination occurred at Nancy Beaumont's request back in 2018, digging up to about 1.5 meters but yielding little to no results.

While this new search is underway, interest surrounding the Beaumont mystery has reignited with the upcoming docuseries titled The Hunters, premiering on February 23, 2024, on Channel 7 and 7plus. The six-part series will follow investigative journalist Adam Shand and former police officer Steve Van Aperen as they revisit high-profile cold cases, starting with the Beaumont children's tragic story. "This is one of the most examined cases in our history," stated Shand, underscoring the difficulty police have faced over the years.

The series intends to bring fresh perspectives on the case. The involvement of justice experts, original detectives, along with extensive retracing of the Beaumont children's final steps, aims to shed new light on the unresolved case. Response theories have been many, yet they have continually fallen short of providing definitive proof of what happened to the Beaumont children all those years ago.

The Beaumont children's story remains etched deeply within Australian history—a somber reminder of the continuing search for truth and justice for the innocent lives lost. With every renewed investigation, including this latest search, hopes soar among family members, investigators, and the public alike, desperate for closure to this heartbreaking chapter.
