Remembering Stars Lost This Year

Farewell to Ron Ely, Michael Kelcourse, and Christopher Ciccone as tributes pour from fans and family

Ron Ely, the actor most famously known for his portrayal of Tarzan during the '60s, has sadly passed away at the age of 86. His daughter, Kiki Ely, confirmed the news via social media, sharing her deep sorrow over losing her "truly magical" father.

Ely, who died at his home situated in Los Alamos, California, captivated audiences during his tenure as Tarzan from 1966 to 1968. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he brought a unique sophistication to the character, who was originally created by Edgar Rice Burroughs back in 1912. Ely's version of Tarzan was not only raised by the jungle but also transformed after returning to civilization.

Critically, Ely was known to perform many of his own stunts. This dedication to authenticity resulted in some serious injuries during his career, including two lion bites and multiple broken bones. Reflecting on the cost of his role, he once quipped to The Fresno Bee about the life sentence of being typecast: "That character is such a trap, nobody gets out alive. I became so associated with the role, I had to go to Europe to get work."

Beyond Tarzan, Ely graced several television classics such as The Many Lives of Doby Gillis, Father Knows Best, Wonder Woman, and Fantasy Island. His versatility also led him to modern series such as L.A. Law and Superboy, not to mention his memorable role as Clark Savage Jr. in the action-adventure film Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze.

Though his career was vibrant, Ely faced personal tragedy when, in 2019, his wife Valerie Lundeen Ely was fatally stabbed by their son, Cameron Ely. Law enforcement authorities intervened, fatally shooting Cameron following the incident. This horrific event not only devastated Ely but also left deep scars on the family's legacy.

Reflecting on her father’s passing, Kiki Ely wrote, “The world has lost one of the greatest men it has ever known - and I have lost my dad... His impact on others is something I have never witnessed in any other person.” This solemn tribute speaks volumes about the cherished memories Ely leaves behind.

While the entertainment industry grieves, Michael Kelcourse, beloved butler of Southern Charm star Patricia Altschul, also passed away recently at the age of 71 after battling health complications. Kelcourse worked alongside Altschul for nearly twenty years, consistently charming audiences with his humor and kindness on the Bravo series.

Kelcourse's death on October 22 came shortly after he suffered another stroke earlier this month. Patricia Altschul confirmed the news through her Instagram, expressing her grief over losing not just her butler, but also her trusted friend and family member. "Michael’s time on Southern Charm endeared him to many," she wrote, acknowledging the outpouring of love and cards from fans he received during his final moments.

He also had previously experienced health issues, having suffered from an acute spinal cord stroke, which left him immobilized on one side. Reports indicate his mental faculties remained intact up until his last days but his physical condition was heavily compromised.

It’s poignant to note how Kelcourse's career transitioned from assisting at emergency kitchens during his youth to becoming Altschul's trusted confidant. His heartwarming personality and dedication to service were evident throughout his life, leaving behind fond memories for all who encountered him.

On the other side of the celebrity sphere, Madonna is mourning the loss of her brother, Christopher Ciccone, who died at the age of 63 due to cancer. Known for his multifaceted roles as dancer, designer, and artist, Ciccone played a pivotal role in Madonna's ascent to superstardom during the 1980s.

Christopher was heavily involved with Madonna's music career, from starring in her music videos to art directing her tours, all of which showcased his creativity and talent. He also authored the bestselling memoir Life with My Sister Madonna, providing insight not only about his career but also glimpses of their complex relationship.

Despite their ups and downs, Ciccone’s sense of pride for his sister’s accomplishments was palpable. His sense of nostalgia was marked by comments about their intertwined lives: "It was like a marriage at times." His passing adds another layer of heartbreak for Madonna, who has recently lost other family members, including her stepmother and older brother.

These recent celebrity deaths tap deeply at the heartstrings of fans, family, and friends alike, reminding us of the fragility of life and the indelible legacies these stars leave behind. They may no longer walk this earth, but the memories and the art they have created endure through the ages.
