Remembering South Africa's Favourite Teacher William Smith

Tributes pour in for the educator who inspired generations through his innovative teaching methods

Remembering South Africa's Favourite Teacher William Smith

South Africans are expressing heartfelt tributes to their beloved "favourite teacher," William Smith, who passed away on Wednesday morning at the age of 85.

The renowned maths and science educator lost his life after battling cancer, leaving behind countless students who have been touched by his work.

For many years, Smith was the face of educational programming on the state broadcaster SABC, where he inspired and educated many South Africans.

His innovative approach to teaching earned him numerous accolades throughout his career, including a prestigious national award from President Cyril Ramaphosa for his contributions to mathematics and science education.

Describing Smith as “an education and cultural icon to our nation,” President Ramaphosa acknowledged the impact Smith had on the lives of millions of students during his time teaching.

Smith's passionate dedication to his curriculum benefited many, offering support to young learners both inside the classroom and through television sessions.

He initiated the 1990s learning program on TV called Learning Channel, which made maths and science education accessible to millions.

The program was described by the presidency as “essentially an open South African school” teaching various subjects, including maths and English.

For students who came from disadvantaged backgrounds, this free supplementary education was often their only access to quality instruction.

Reflecting on his legacy, Johan Ferreira, now a professor at the University of Pretoria, praised Smith's incredible influence, stating he inspired belief among students, making them realize anyone could grasp scientific concepts.

Ferreira regarded Smith as “the original science content creator of South Africa,” emphasizing how his work paved the way for future educational programming.

On social media, numerous people shared their personal stories of how Smith's teachings guided them through their education.

Wendy Verwey Bekker tweeted, "William Smith got me through high school maths and science. What a legend and national treasure,” highlighting the significant impact he had on her academic success.

Another tribute came from Roy Petzer, who acknowledged the comfort of knowing Smith through his educational programs, saying, “Thank you, Mr. William Smith for all those very narrow passes in Maths.”

Zola Hashatsi ka Motsiri remarked on the guidance Smith provided through his TV lessons and recognized the legacy he built with countless students.

Smith's contributions did not go unrecognized; he was awarded the national “Teacher of the Year” and was voted one of the top three presenters on South African television back in 1998.

His legacy also earned him the honor of being listed as the 86th on the Top 100 Great South Africans list in 2004.

After retiring, he relocated to Australia with his family, where he passed away, surrounded by loved ones, according to his daughter Jessica.

Jessica expressed how the family is not just grieving his loss but also celebrating the legacy he left behind, which countless others are honoring as well.

William Smith is survived by his wife Jenny, three daughters, and five grandchildren, who continue to cherish his memory.
