Remembering Alberto Castagna: His Love And Legacy

Rettondini reflects on the impact of her long-term partner, marking 20 years since his death.

On March 1, 2025, the Italian television industry marks the 20th anniversary of the untimely death of Alberto Castagna, whose vibrant spirit and engaging charisma left indelible impressions on audiences nationwide. He passed away at the age of 59, following struggles with severe health complications resulting from the rupture of a double aneurysm of the thoracic aorta, forever changing the lives of those who loved him.

Francesca Rettondini, Castagna's longtime partner, remembers her experiences with him, sharing candid reflections on the enduring love they shared. Speaking with Oggi, she expressed the difficulty of overcoming such loss: "I spent ten years recovering after his death; it doesn't mean forgetting him, but at least distancing myself from the more painful memories." Rettondini emphasized how Castagna encouraged her playful side and brought joy to her career.

Their relationship blossomed amid the success of various television programs, including Stranamore, Complotto di famiglia, and Bellissima. These shared moments transformed her perspective on life, as Rettondini recalls, "With him, I discovered my playful side and the joy of hosting." Their bond, tinged with both love and sorrow, deepened as Castagna faced mounting health challenges.

Castagna's health struggles began back in 1998 when he underwent surgery for the dangerous condition. His recovery became marred by complications, requiring several interventions and leaving him with chronic renal failure. Rettondini was by his side virtually round-the-clock during his hospital stays, though her access to him wasn’t always assured. At one point, hospital regulations prohibited her from visiting, and Rettondini felt his absence acutely. "One day, he couldn’t see me anymore, and I am sure he was asking where I had gone," she recounted.

To communicate her love, Rettondini devised a clever scheme with mutual friend Doriana Patanè, who visited Castagna with the message written on her hand: "Franci loves you." "That gesture of true friendship I will never forget," she noted. Yet, after leaving the hospital, Castagna returned to his ex-wife, which devastated Rettondini, who states, "that left me with even greater pain than I had endured during his illness. We never truly left each other; there was sincere and deep affection between us."

Castagna's struggles were hidden behind the bright lights of television as he returned to hosting duties on Stranamore in 2001, channeling his indomitable spirit. Yet, even as he regained some normalcy, his physical condition continued to decline, shadowed by constant health challenges. His untimely demise from internal bleeding on March 1, 2005, shocked both his fans and colleagues, resulting in widespread grief.

Castagna’s funeral took place at the Church of Artists in Piazza del Popolo, Rome, attended by many who adored him for his warmth and spirit. He is buried at Passo Corese cemetery, where his ashes rest quietly. Fans and colleagues alike remembered him not merely for his professional talents but also for the genuine humanity he showed, captivating audiences with his charismatic performances.

Francesca Rettondini remains vibrant today, actively pursuing her career. "After years of loneliness, I fell in love again with Rosario Petix, who is reliable and supportive," she shared. Alongside Petix, she plans to produce films and soon will create music for the narrative of L’insabbiato, telling the true story of Italy’s first journalist killed by the mafia, thereby continuing to honor the creative spirit Castagna embodied.

Alberto Castagna's legacy resonates through his unforgettable contributions to Italian television and the lives he touched personally. While his time was brief, his impact continues to inspire and provoke fond memories among those he left behind, particularly for Rettondini, who reflects, "He taught me joy and brought light to my life, and I carry those lessons with me as I move forward." His absence is felt deeply, but his spirit endures through the love and respect shared by many.
