Remembering Alberto Castagna: A Beloved TV Icon

Twenty years after his passing, family and friends reflect on his legacy and heartwarming memories.

On March 1, 2025, the Italian television community remembers Alberto Castagna, one of the most beloved television presenters, as it marks the 20th anniversary of his untimely death. Castagna, widely known as the star of the hit show Stranamore, touched the hearts of millions during his career and continues to be cherished by those who loved him.

Carolina Castagna, his only daughter born on May 22, 1992, recalls her father vividly. "My father was my superhero. All daughters say this about their dads, but mine was more than just any father," she shared during her recollections on La Volta Buona. The memories include heartwarming tales from their time together and how her father’s health challenges impacted their lives. Reflecting on the time when she saw him without his iconic mustache during his hospital stay, Carolina said, "It was traumatic. He didn’t look like my dad anymore."

Alberto’s life was not only filled with professional success but also complications stemming from his personal relationships. He married Concetta Romano, whom he affectionately called Pucci, shortly after their daughter’s birth. Their marriage, unfortunately, lasted only one year due to Castagna's tumultuous affections for actress Francesca Rettondini, with whom he spent significant time until his death. Rettondini's feelings for Castagna remained strong, and she opened up about their bond, emphasizing, "We never truly left each other. There was always this sincere and deep affection."

Francesca, during her candid interview for Oggi magazine, reflected on the darker moments of Castagna’s life, especially his health struggles. After suffering from the burst of double aneurysm of the thoracic aorta, Castagna underwent numerous surgeries, changes, and challenges. "After the operation he postponed for too long, he faced significant complications," she detailed, showing her unwavering support as she cared for him night and day through his difficult times. Yet, the couple’s relationship faced hurdles, particularly when Alberto made the decision to return to his ex-wife after his recovery.

Carolina also touched on the poignant memories of shared musical passions with her father. Cherishing one specific moment, she lamented, "The last gift he gave me was a Beyoncé album, just the day before he died. Music was something we bonded over, and I still cherish it today."

Both women echoed one common sentiment about Castagna: his enduring sense of humor and larger-than-life presence. Francesca reminisced, "He was not just entertaining on-screen; he infused joy off-screen too. His laughter and mischievous jokes made everything brighter."

Alberto Castagna, born on January 1, 1945, began his career as a journalist before becoming one of the most prominent figures on Italian television. He began at TG2 and eventually found fame with Stranamore, where his magnetic presence captivated audiences nationwide. Tragically, he passed away on March 1, 2005, due to internal bleeding after confronting years of extensive health issues, leaving the television community—and particularly his family—devastated.

Reflecting on her daily life now, Carolina also mentioned how her father's unique humor influences her. "Whenever I think of what I should do, I ask myself, ‘What would dad do?’ I try to embody his lightheartedness every day."

On this anniversary, Francesca and Carolina remind us all of the depth and warmth of Alberto Castagna's life. The eloquent expressions of love and admiration cannot overshadow the legacy of the man who brought joy to many. His memory continues to resonate, not only through the work left behind but also through the heartfelt stories shared by those who knew and loved him.

While the pain of loss remains evident, Francesca poignantly remarked, "It took me ten years to recover from his passing—not to forget him, but to distance myself from the painful memories." This enduring sentiment reveals the powerful bond they shared and signifies how certain relationships leave indelible marks on our hearts.

Indeed, even as they live separate lives today, the connection and memories of Alberto Castagna flow strongly through the emotions of those who knew him best. His legacy, like any lasting hero, will continue to shine brightly through the stories told and the love shared.
