BOSTON -- Due to persistent rain in the Boston area, Saturday’s Red Sox-Cardinals game was postponed and will be played as part of a day-night doubleheader on Sunday, April 6, 2025. Fans with tickets to Saturday’s game can use them for Game 1, which is set to start at 1:35 p.m. ET/12:35 p.m. CT. The nightcap will go on as scheduled on Sunday Night Baseball at 7:10 p.m. ET/6:10 p.m. CT.
The clubs had a delay of two hours and eight minutes before the decision was made to postpone Saturday’s contest. Righty Richard Fitts was in line to start on Saturday before the postponement, but now the spotlight shifts to the Sunday starters.
For Newcomb, a Massachusetts native, this will be his first start at Fenway in a home uniform. Fans are eager to see how he performs in front of his home crowd, especially given the excitement surrounding his return to Boston.
Right-handed pitcher Andre Pallante gave the rain-soaked fans at Fenway a brief tease on Saturday night when he emerged from the dugout to get in a throwing session. However, he was simply just getting in his work before making his second start of the season on Sunday. Pallante is scheduled to pitch Sunday’s first game.
In his first start of the season, Pallante made a strong impression by beating the Twins, holding them to four hits and two earned runs over five innings of work. The reliever-turned-starter has shown promise, allowing three earned runs or less in 15 of his 20 starts in 2024.
The second game of the doubleheader will feature veteran right-hander Miles Mikolas on the mound. Mikolas has a solid track record against the Red Sox, having beaten them at Fenway on May 14, 2023, in a Sunday Night Baseball game on ESPN. In that outing, he limited the Red Sox to just four hits and one earned run over six innings, leading the Cardinals to a convincing 9-1 victory.
The St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox will play a doubleheader on Sunday. ESPN will broadcast the second game of the three-game weekend set between the two teams, which has generated a lot of excitement among fans.

The Cardinals got on the board in the third inning with an RBI single from Lars Nootbaar, but Boston's Carlos Narváez answered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single as well. St. Louis dug closer in the fourth with a three-run homer from Iván Herrera to make it 6-4, then one inning later Brendan Donovan hit a solo shot to keep the pressure on the Red Sox.
