Red Alert For Heavy Rainfall Issued For Ronda, Malaga

Residents warned of extreme danger as Aemet predicts up to 120 liters of rain today.

The provinces of Malaga are bracing for severe weather as the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has elevated the alert level to red due to heavy rainfall expected in Ronda and its surrounding Serranía area. This unprecedented alert, active until 18:59 on March 3, 2025, forecasts potential accumulations of up to 120 liters of rain per square meter over the next twelve hours, marking the situation as extremely dangerous.

The announcement came as heavy rains have already begun causing disruptions across the region. For example, Pujerra has recorded significant rainfall, tallying nearly 95 liters within the last twelve hours, with localized reports showing 38 liters falling within just one hour. Authorities encourage residents to remain vigilant, as Aemet has warned, "El peligro es extremo" (The danger is extreme), advising citizens to avoid riverbanks and refrain from non-essential travel.

The Junta de Andalucía has responded proactively, initiating the flood risk plan (Peri) and elevting it to operational situation 1 due to the rising threat from rainfall. This decision echoes the findings from meteorologists, who are currently observing stationary downpours particularly impacting the area around Pujerra. The president of the regional government, Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla, underscored the necessity for public caution by stating, "Hemos enviado un mensaje EsAlert a la población de la comarca de Ronda por las intensas lluvias para informar y pedir PRUDENCIA" (We have sent an EsAlert message to the people of the Ronda region due to the intense rain to inform and ask for caution).

With the forecast indicating rain between 2 PM and 7 PM, residents are warned to prepare for possible flooding and road closures. Many local governments have activated their civil protection emergency plans, including Alhaurín el Grande, Álora, Igualeja, and more, ensuring they are ready to respond to the impact of the torrential rainfall.

Road conditions have already deteriorated, leading to significant disruptions. The MA-7304 and MA-7300 roads have been closed due to mudslides and debris obstructing passage. The situation has prompted local authorities to scramble emergency services to clear affected routes and address public safety. Reports indicate several roads within the Ronda area are impassable, including the MA-8301 from Estepona to Jubrique.

The effects of the rainfall extend beyond immediate infrastructure challenges; many local schools have opted to close early as a precaution against the worsening conditions. The town hall of Igualeja confirmed the early dismissal of students following discussions with regional education authorities to prioritize their safety.

Residents are urged to take the necessary precautions to stay safe. The emergency services recommend avoiding flood-prone areas, steering clear of bridges and river crossings. Authorities advise educating oneself on road conditions before attempting to travel and adopting safe driving practices, such as reducing speed and maintaining increased following distances.

This weather event closely follows another storm front affecting the Almería province, which has led to road closures and overflow situations. Hence, the need for efficient communication and coordination among regional authorities is clear, particularly as weather events become more erratic and intense due to climate factors.

While there is no longer any active coastal warning, the province is experiencing severe effects from this intensifying weather system, emphasizing the necessity for quick adaptation to fluctuated weather patterns.

Weather monitors continue to keep track of the situation, as the accumulation of rain has surged to concerning levels at various recording stations throughout the province. Notably, the river Turón is also witnessing rapid water level increases, requiring heightened vigilance from emergency responders.

The Junta de Andalucía's strong measures reflect the importance of preparedness and swift action to mitigate risks associated with such weather events. It is hoped the community will heed safety instructions and remain safe amid the impending storms.

This alert will continue to be updated as the situation evolves, and all citizens are encouraged to stay tuned to local news outlets for real-time information.
