ScotRail and Network Rail have set the bar high this year by raising nearly £155,000 for the 2024 Scottish Poppy Appeal, surpassing last year's record by 17%. This incredible achievement reflects the generous contributions of both customers and employees, who united to support Poppyscotland’s mission for veterans and their families.
The fundraising initiatives undertaken by ScotRail included donations collected from customers, free travel for on-duty Poppyscotland staff, and access to high-traffic retail space within major train stations across Scotland. Collection tins could be found at ticket offices, and enthusiastic collectors were welcomed at prominent stations, including Glasgow Central, Glasgow Queen Street, Edinburgh Waverley, and Haymarket, leading up to Armistice Day.
“We’re incredibly proud to have raised a record amount for the Scottish Poppy Appeal,” said James Ledgerwood, ScotRail Head of Economic & Community Development. “This milestone reflects the incredible generosity of our customers and our people, uniting to support Poppyscotland’s valuable work for veterans and their families across Scotland.”
Gordon Michie, the Head of Fundraising and Learning at Poppyscotland, expressed his appreciation for the support, stating, “We are absolutely thrilled to have had the support of ScotRail and Network Rail again this year… ensuring a safe space for all is invaluable support.”
Meanwhile, at the Amazon fulfilment centre in Warrington, employees took part in the festive spirit by raising £80,000 for Maggie’s Cancer Charity during their event “Strictly Maggie’s.” This group of 12 Amazon staff volunteered to bring cheer and hope to those battling cancer. The significant amount raised will assist Maggie’s mission of providing emotional and practical support to individuals and families affected by cancer.
Karen McPhillips, one of the employees involved, shared her experience: “I had a great time with my colleagues at Strictly Maggie’s. We loved being part of such a special fundraiser for a cause affecting so many people.”
Sarah Burgess, centre fundraiser from Maggie’s Wirral, expressed gratitude for the tremendous effort put forth by Amazon employees, stating, “The evening was a great success, and we raised £80,000, which will help us continue to have a positive impact on the lives of those living with cancer and their families.”
Maggie’s Cancer Charity operates facilities within the grounds of Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, providing support to 78% of newly diagnosed cancer patients locally. The centre offers evidence-based core programs aimed at improving both physical and emotional well-being.
These fundraising efforts by ScotRail, Network Rail, and Amazon employees not only demonstrate the power of community engagement but also highlight the significant impact collective efforts can have on charitable organizations. It’s heartening to witness such determination to support those who have served and those who are facing health challenges.
Record-breaking fundraising is not just about numbers; it’s about the heart and spirit behind every effort to assist those in need. Each donation tallied and every volunteer hour clocked makes waves of change, proving once again how powerful community spirit can be.
