Recall Issued For Granit And Lundgrens Snus Products

British American Tobacco warns consumers about cancer-causing chemical risks

On December 19, 2024, British American Tobacco Sweden announced the recall of multiple snus products from its Granit and Lundgrens brands due to the detection of excessive levels of benz(a)pyrene, a chemical associated with cancer risk.

The recall affects several different products, including Granit Original White Portion Large, Granit Original Loose, Granit Original Portion, and various Lundgrens products such as Lundgrens Skåne and Lundgrens Skärgården. Specifically, products manufactured between May 30 and November 10, 2024, are impacted by this recall. The company is notifying consumers to cease using these products immediately.

"Consumers who have purchased these snus products are advised to stop using them," the company stated. Consumers are also encouraged to dispose of the products and contact British American Tobacco Sweden for refunds or alternate products. The recall follows previous warnings and marks another important step for consumer safety as the potential health risks of these contaminated snus products are alarming.

The chemical benz(a)pyrene has been linked to cancer and is categorized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as potentially dangerous. It falls under the class of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which can be formed during the incomplete combustion of organic materials. Besides tobacco, PAHs can be found in food contaminants and various environmental sources, including air pollution.

This recent recall signals increasing scrutiny on tobacco products’ safety and quality. "We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause," stated British American Tobacco Sweden, acknowledging the potential concerns raised by consumers.

The health risks associated with benz(a)pyrene are concerning, especially as the popularity of snus has surged over the past two decades. According to public health insights, the use of snus has been on the rise, with overall consumption increasing significantly since 2003. The current health advice calls for close monitoring of tobacco products and increased consumer awareness about potential hazards.

British American Tobacco's swift response to the detected levels of benz(a)pyrene reflects the industry's growing responsibility to safeguard consumer health. The company has been proactive about addressing such issues transparently and has committed to maintaining the highest product quality standards.

The recall emphasizes the need for vigilance among consumers, especially those using snus products from the affected batches. Consumers are reminded to stay informed about safety recalls and to report any adverse reactions experienced from tobacco products.

Overall, the recall of Granit and Lundgrens snus from British American Tobacco Sweden is significant for both consumer health and industry standards. It raises questions about product safety and reminds consumers to be aware of the potential health impacts associated with tobacco use. The company's transparent communication surrounding this issue is hoped to restore trust and encourage responsible use of their products.
