RC Vannes Upsets Montpellier 37-24

Vannes shines bright at home, escaping the bottom of Top 14 standings with third straight win.

RC Vannes achieved a stunning upset victory over Montpellier, triumphing 37-24 on Saturday at the Rabine Stadium, marking their third consecutive win in the Top 14 and escaping from the bottom of the table.

The match, held during the 17th round of the Top 14, saw Vannes come out strong right from the start. The team's superiority was evident with the first try scored by Ruru just nine minutes in, followed by additional tries from Surano and Moukoro, who came off the bench. Half-time saw Vannes enter with a commanding 27-3 lead, bolstered by Maxime Lafage's flawless kicking performance of three conversions and two penalties.

Despite the second half being dominated by Montpellier, who rallied with two late tries from Simmonds and Doan, Vannes held firm with their solid defense, preventing greater damage and maintaining their lead. They had to stave off considerable pressure throughout the half, but their defensive resilience proved to be key.

Following the defeat of Stade Français to Toulon on the same weekend, Vannes took this opportunity to leapfrog their rivals, leaving them hopeful for maintaining their Top 14 status. This victory marks Vannes' first time out of the bottom position since early in the season.

"Thanks to this victory, Vannes is no longer at the bottom of the Top 14!" celebrated the team manager Jean-Noël Spitzer, who has guided Vannes through some tough matches. The players' dedication and effort resounded through the pitch, especially during the fiercely contested moments against Montpellier.

Montpellier's defeat, their third straight, raised concerns. After being humbled by top teams like Toulouse and Toulon, they needed to react but fell short until very late in the game. Their late surge seemed too little too late, reflecting difficulties related to indiscipline, which have plagued them throughout the season.

Overall, this victory is pivotal not only for RC Vannes' season but also signals significant challenges for Montpellier going forward as they prepare to face Castres next week.
