Rayo Vallecano Prepares For Crucial Match Against Espanyol

Coach Inigo Pérez emphasizes focus on 40 points and player fitness ahead of key La Liga clash

Inigo Pérez, the head coach of Rayo Vallecano, held a press conference on April 3, 2025, to discuss the upcoming match against RCD Espanyol, set to take place on April 5, 2025, at the Estadio de Vallecas. This match marks the 30th round of La Liga, and Pérez expressed confidence in his team's position as they approach the final stretch of the season.

Pérez characterized the upcoming match against Espanyol as similar to the previous week's game, highlighting the importance of playing at home in Vallecas. He stated, "Yes, a match with characteristics similar to last week. It’s true that we play in Vallecas, and one feels more supported here. Both teams have changed quite a bit since that match, but we both maintain the same identity, as we try to do. We are two energetic teams; the coaches demand a lot from our players. Tomorrow will likely be a tight match where we must work hard to control the game and try to make a difference."

As the season enters its final nine matches, Pérez emphasized the significance of achieving 40 points to secure their place in La Liga for the next season. He noted, "Nine matches are few, but at the same time, they are many. Whatever happens, there’s still time. There are complex rivals ahead. We are well situated, but we need to focus on winning every match. I dream in June, after the season ends. Once the season starts, I don’t have time to abstract myself from the reality of day-to-day. I prefer to think about those 40 points and try to win every game. At no point do I think we can’t play in Europe. We all understand that being where we are is a call to hope."

When discussing player fitness, Pérez provided updates on key players. Sergio Camello is currently in a process of reintegration, having begun to walk without crutches, which Pérez described as "good news." He stated, "Camello is in a process of reincorporation, walking without crutches. It’s great to see him at the training facility. He’s making progress, and we’ll see how he advances." In contrast, Álvaro García is available for the match, despite having received a recent hard hit. Pérez confirmed, "Álvaro is fine and available for tomorrow."

Pérez also commented on Raúl de Tomás, who has recently changed his look. He expressed hope that this change could serve as a motivational boost for the player. "I’ve seen Raúl has changed his look. It suits him well, but I can’t see myself like that. I hope it serves as a stimulus. Besides the good sensations he’s been having medically, it would be great for him to find routine and motivation to help the team. I’m not too aware of what the fans think, but I hope they see him back and contributing as one of us in the squad," he said.

Another key player, Óscar Trejo, was highlighted by Pérez for his invaluable contributions to the team. He stated, "Trejo is a player with very important performance. He’s one of the pillars that unites and builds the team. It’s a luxury to have him here." This sentiment reflects the respect Trejo has within the team and the crucial role he plays both on and off the pitch.

As the press conference wrapped up, Pérez reflected on the importance of winning at home. He noted, "Winning in Vallecas brings double joy because you gain three points and see the fans smiling, which is vital for our peace of mind regarding what we’ve been doing. However, the reality is that in these nine matches, it doesn’t matter whether we win at home or away; we need to achieve our goal. We have 40 points, and there are nine finals left to play. We must live this reality with maximum hope, just as we have until now."

As Rayo Vallecano prepares for this crucial match against Espanyol, the team is looking to solidify its standing in La Liga and continue its pursuit of safety and perhaps more. With a strong focus on teamwork, player fitness, and a positive mindset, Pérez and his squad are ready to face the challenges ahead.
