Rare Oarfish Sightings Ignite Doomsday Myths On California Coast

The discovery of the elusive oarfish coinciding with recent earthquakes revives ancient fears and folklore

Kayakers and snorkelers near La Jolla Cove, California, made headlines recently after spotting an extremely rare oarfish, often dubbed the "doomsday fish." This peculiar creature surfaced on August 10, and its emergence has rekindled local folklore associated with impending disasters.

Known scientifically as Regalecus glesne, oarfish are long, ribbon-shaped fish often found deep beneath ocean waters. Rarely coming close to shore, this 12-foot specimen had already perished by the time it was discovered, and it's one of only 20 oarfish recorded along California's coastline since 1901.

The longer and larger oarfish can exceed lengths of 30 feet, showcasing vibrant silver scales and large bulging eyes. Their unusual appearance and rarity have sparked numerous sea monster legends, captivating both scientists and the general public.

The nickname "doomsday fish" springs from the belief, prevalent especially in Japan, linking oarfish sightings to natural disasters. Historical reports note sightings of multiple oarfish before Japan's devastating earthquake and tsunami in 2011, which killed thousands.

This association has led to widespread fear and superstition around the fish, often leading concerned beachgoers to alert scientists at the sight of one. Meredith Moore, director of the Fish Conservation Program at Ocean Conservancy, elaborated on the oarfish's ominous reputation, stating, "Some places view them as harbingers of bad news, such as natural disasters like earthquakes."

Despite these beliefs, scientific research has debunked the supposed connection between oarfish sightings and seismic activities. A 2019 study conducted by Japanese researchers labeled this link as superstition, indicating no actual correlation between the two phenomena.

After the Discovery of this oarfish, local lifeguards and marine experts quickly coordinated to transport its remains to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for examination. The necropsy performed by scientists aims to ascertain the cause of the fish's death and to add valuable insight about this elusive species.

Ben Frable, manager of the Marine Vertebrate Collection at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, noted the rarity and intrigue surrounding these animals. "Oarfish are special because of their size and unique appearance," he said, emphasizing the excitement often shared by marine biologists when they encounter one.

Moore remarked on the biological intrigue of oarfish, stating, "If they wash up close to the surface, it usually indicates the fish is sick, dying, or disoriented." Consequently, their appearances are often more of a concern for scientists than signs of impending calamities.

Another significant point raised by marine experts is the Oarfish's unusual swimming techniques due to their long ribbon-like bodies. These fish naturally thrive at depths where currents are weaker, hence when found at the surface, it's predominantly due to distress or disorientation.

Similar to other species linked with folklore, oarfish continue to fascinate and mystify both casual observers and dedicated researchers alike. Each discovery offers potential insights, yet also revitalizes the myths and stories associated with this enchanting fish.

Adding to the intrigue, there was a 4.4 magnitude earthquake shortly after the oarfish was spotted, heightening community conversations about its presence. This led many to wonder whether the fish's reappearance was more than mere coincidence.

The legends surrounding oarfish do not solely represent fears or worries; they also stand as cultural artifacts reflective of humanity's complexity. Such stories beautifully intertwine the realms of science and folklore, compelling narrators to explore the ocean's depths for unknown wonders.

Despite the calamity associated with them, oarfish sightings can be valuable for marine science, possibly shedding light on the life history and biology of deep-sea creatures. Well-preserved specimens unaffiliated with folklore can provide researchers with much-needed data on marine ecosystems.

Californians and others along coastal regions continue to keep their eyes peeled for these elusive wonders, rapidly becoming legendary fish of intrigue.
