Rare Black Seadevil Anglerfish Spotted Surfacing Near Tenerife

This astonishing sighting marks possibly the first recorded daytime appearance of the elusive deep-sea predator.

February 2025 has witnessed a remarkable and rare marine phenomenon—a live black seadevil anglerfish, scientifically known as Melanocetus johnsonii, was spotted swimming near the ocean's surface off the coast of Tenerife, Spain. This extraordinary sighting is particularly significant as it marks potentially the first recorded video of this elusive deep-sea predator captured during daylight.

Marine photographer David Jara Boguñá and the Spanish conservation organization Condrik Tenerife were responsible for this incredible discovery. Their team was conducting research on sharks when they stumbled upon the anglerfish swimming vertically less than a mile from the coast. Notably, this sighting took place during early February, astonishing marine biologists and enthusiasts alike.

The black seadevil, often dubbed the "black sea monster," typically inhabits the depths of the ocean, residing between 650 and 6,500 feet below the surface. Characterized by its haunting appearance—a round, pitch-black body with needle-like teeth—the female black seadevil is also known for the bioluminescent lure on her head. This lure plays a key role, attracting unsuspecting prey by emitting light, making it one of the few sources shining through the ocean's pitch-black depths.

According to Condrik Tenerife, up until now, records of this species have mostly consisted of larvae, dead adults, or specimens captured by deep-sea submarines during scientific expeditions. Consequently, witnessing the anglerfish alive and free-swimming near the surface is both groundbreaking and rare. The conservation group noted on social media, "This could be the first recorded sighting in the world of a black demon or adult abyssal alive, in broad daylight and on the surface!"

While the sighting thrilled researchers, it left many questions unanswered. Speculations about why this deep-sea dweller was found at such shallow depths range from possible illness to the fish fleeing from predators. "The reason for its presence in such shallow waters is uncertain. It could be due to illness, an upwelling current, fleeing from a predator, etc.," explains the research team at Condrik Tenerife.

The black seadevil anglerfish is one of the ocean's most enigmatic creatures. Females can grow up to 20 centimeters (about 8 inches) long, whereas males are significantly smaller—barely reaching one inch. Unlike females, males do not possess the characteristic bioluminescent lure and instead often attach themselves to the male for nutrients, showcasing the anglerfish's extraordinary reproductive adaptations.

Dr. Laia Valor, the marine biologist credited with this notable discovery, highlighted the importance of this sighting for scientific research and our overall knowledge of deep-sea ecosystems. These rare glimpses lend insight not only to the behaviors and health of marine species but also to environmental changes impacting their habitats.

Since this historical sighting, similar occurrences come to mind—like the reports of goblin sharks near Florida or the astonishing jellyfish Stygiomedusa gigantea appearing close to Monterey Bay. Each observation contributes invaluable information about marine life often hidden from human eyes.

While the black seadevil was initially observed swimming gracefully through the sunlit waters, it did not survive much longer after the video was shot, succumbing to what appeared to be injuries or the rigors of remaining far from its natural habitat. Fortunately, its brief appearance sparked curiosity and excitement, serving as a reminder of how little we know about the hidden depths of the ocean.
