Raphael Returns To El Hormiguero With New Album

The iconic singer pays tribute to French chanson with Ayer… aún and shares emotional concert tales

Raphael, the legendary Spanish singer, made waves once again with his recent appearance on the hit show El Hormiguero, captivating audiences and host Pablo Motos alike. On December 16th, Raphael stepped onto the set with much fanfare to promote his latest album, Ayer… aún, marking his return nearly a year after his last visit. The album pays homage to the greats of French chanson, including icons like Édith Piaf, Jacques Brel, and Charles Aznavour, reflecting Raphael's long-standing admiration for these artists.

At 81 years old, Raphael's energy and passion are undiminished, as he shared amusing anecdotes from his storied career. When he first began, he was only 18 and highly influenced by the popularity of French music. He whimsically reminisced about his near collaboration with Édith Piaf, recalling how he was slated to open her show at Valencia’s Parador del Foc during the Fallas festival. Sadly, she fell ill and could not make the performance—an experience Raphael has held dear throughout his life.

“Following Edith Piaf has been like following a goddess,” Raphael expressed, his admiration for her evident. He has sung numerous French songs throughout his career but launching this complete tribute album is something he considers overdue. During his chat with Motos, he displayed his deep emotional connection to the music, explaining, “I have always dreamed of doing something like this.”

A highlight of the evening came when Motos showed a clip of Raphael dueting with Piaf. The stirring rendition of 'Non, je ne regrette rien' struck such chord with Motos he exclaimed, "Stop the world already!" This reaction highlighted the impact of Raphael’s artistry and his powerful connection to the music he cherishes.

Raphael also shared insights about his upcoming concerts, scheduled for December 20 and 21 at Madrid’s WiZink Center. Proudly, he noted he has filled the venue thirty times, showcasing his enduring popularity. He teased fans with promises of holiday music, selections from his new album, and cherished personal favorites during the shows, generating excitement among his admirers.

Despite his illustrious career, Raphael confessed he doesn’t often attend concerts himself, as they usually conflict with his busy schedule. When he does attend, it often involves traveling to see the artists perform rather than just catching them locally. Reflecting on concerts he’s attended, he mentioned legendary performers like Barbra Streisand and Liza Minnelli, calling them his muses, particularly noting his admiration for Minnelli as “an artist like no other.”

His encounter with Elvis Presley left him with mixed feelings. “When I saw Elvis, he wasn’t himself. It was such a shame; he had achieved everything, yet there he was,” he recalled, wishing he could have witnessed the King of Rock at his prime. Raphael was candid when discussing the pressures of maintaining performance standards, humorously touching on how he assesses venues before shows: “I don’t enter through the audience; I sneak around back and scope the stage. It’s about figuring out my approach and strategy.”

Raphael’s visit and the lively exchange with Motos showcased not only his theatrical prowess but also his rich history within the entertainment industry. The charming interplay provided fans and viewers intimate glimpses of the life of one of Spain's most celebrated musical figures. With his unique spirit and commitment to the arts, it’s clear Raphael isn't slowing down anytime soon—two-hour concerts at his age are no small feat!

His relaunch of French classics serves as both reflection and celebration of his artistic life, making Ayer… aún more than just another album but rather, it is the culmination of years of inspiration and aspirations. Raphael has woven his narrative through the fabric of these timeless melodies, crafting much more than music; he's built a legacy.

With laughter, nostalgia, and heartfelt reflections, Raphael's charm remains unbeaten—a symbol of dedication to his craft, future generations of artists, and the audiences who still find joy and comfort within his songs.
