Rangers Brace For Major Player Departures This Summer

As many as six key players may leave as contracts expire amidst club transition.

Rangers FC faces a significant transition this summer as the club could lose up to six first-team players whose contracts are set to expire. With new ownership, a potential new sporting director, and a fresh managerial approach looming, the fate of these players remains uncertain as the transfer window approaches.

At the heart of this potential overhaul is veteran centre-back Leon Balogun. The 37-year-old defender, who has made 23 appearances this season but has battled injuries that sidelined him for 10 games, is among those nearing the end of his tenure at Ibrox. He spoke recently about his commitment to the club, stating, "If I can play at a great club like this and add a bit more success, then I have absolutely nothing against it." Balogun's performance during crucial matches against rivals like Celtic and European opposition has drawn praise, raising questions about his future with the squad.

Another key player, Ianis Hagi, is also in a delicate position. After returning from a loan spell at La Liga’s Alaves, the Romanian midfielder found himself in the mix with the first team this season. Previously out of favor due to contract discussions, Hagi has since been active but is free to negotiate with other clubs this summer. Reflecting on his situation, Hagi commented, “Out of respect to everyone, the club and my agents have to talk about my future. For me, right now, and this is really an honest answer, I don't really think about the future.” This highlights the complexities of maintaining focus amid ongoing negotiations.

Tom Lawrence, who signed a three-year agreement with Rangers in July 2022, is also looking for clarity as his contract deadline approaches. The Welsh international has been utilized mainly off the bench but has made 24 appearances this season, contributing five goals and two assists. He currently attracts interest from Turkish Super Lig club Besiktas, renewing speculation about his future with Rangers. Lawrence's situation is emblematic of the club's current turmoil as they navigate potential player exits while seeking new acquisitions.

Perhaps the most notable case comes from Vaclav Cerny, who has delivered a stellar performance with 17 goals this season. Currently on loan from Wolfsburg, he is set to return to his parent club this summer, but he has expressed a desire to stay at Rangers long-term. “I definitely do,” Cerny responded when asked about his future intentions. “But there are so many aspects that I can't control. All I can do is be the best I can and keep up my form and numbers.” Cerny’s impressive stats underlie the risks Rangers face if they cannot secure a permanent deal for him.

Neraysho Kasanwirjo is another name on the list of players whose futures are uncertain. Originally borrowed from Feyenoord, injuries have plagued Kasanwirjo, compelling the club to send him back to his parent team for rehabilitation after only 12 appearances this season. There are doubts as to whether the club will complete the loan-to-permanent transition when the time comes.

Moreover, Rafael Fernandes has been brought in on an emergency loan from LOSC Lille, but he has seen limited action, featuring just three times since joining in January 2025. With his loan set to expire at the end of the season, it remains to be seen whether the club will pursue a permanent arrangement for the center-back, especially following a dismal Scottish Cup outing.

As Rangers strategize for the next season, the management must confront the impending departures of many first-team players, all while kicking off negotiations with potential new signings. As the clock ticks down to the close of the current season, uncertainty looms large not just over the players, but the club itself. Will they manage to retain talent, or will they endure significant losses that reshape their squad dynamics? Only time will tell.
