Ramesh Mendis Returns To Sri Lanka's Squad For Second Test Against Australia

After suffering their worst Test defeat, Sri Lanka aims for redemption with all-rounder Mendis rejoining the team.

Sri Lanka's cricket team has made significant changes for the upcoming second Test against Australia, bringing all-rounder Ramesh Mendis back to the squad. This decision follows their overwhelming defeat in the first Test, where they were vanquished by an innings and 242 runs, marking their worst Test defeat to date.

Ramesh Mendis rejoined the squad on February 3, after initially being dropped from the team due to disappointing performances against New Zealand. Team manager Mahinda Halangoda confirmed Mendis's addition, emphasizing the necessity of enhancing the spin department after the disastrous outing against the Australians at the Galle International Cricket Stadium.

Mendis's recall is anticipated to provide depth to the Sri Lankan spin attack, which has faced scrutiny following the first Test. The selectors have shown confidence in his abilities due to his remarkable form during the Major League Tournament, where he showcased impressive stats: taking 24 wickets at an average of 21.91 and scoring 260 runs at 52 across six innings.

His overall Test performance, though less stellar with seven wickets at 40.85 against Australia in his two previous encounters, has inspired hope for redemption as Sri Lanka looks to avoid another series defeat. The Australians lead the two-match series 1-0 and are eager to secure their first series win on Sri Lankan soil since 2011.

The squad adjustments also involve the departure of pacer Vishwa Fernando and batter Lahiru Udana. Mendis's expected entry directly addresses the batting collapse experienced against Australian spinners, who dismantled the Lankan lineup, led by Usman Khawaja’s double century.

With Mendis's inclusion, Sri Lanka is set to field more experience and skill as they prepare for the second match. His performance will be pivotal, not only for the spin options but also for bolstering the batting lineup as they aim to mount a serious challenge against Australia.

“Sri Lanka have opted for Mendis to strengthen their composition, especially considering the impact of the Australian spin attack,” said Halangoda. He noted the need to adapt and refine strategies to match Australia's potent batting and bowling capabilities.

The second Test is scheduled to commence on February 6, with Sri Lanka determined to level the series after the recent setback. Mendis's return could prove to be the catalyst the team requires to regain their footing against the formidable Australians.
