Ramadan 2025 Starts March 1 After Moon Sighting

The UAE moon-sighting committee confirms the start date after spotting the crescent moon.

Ramadan 2025 is officially set to begin on Saturday, March 1, 2025, following the sighting of the crescent moon by the UAE moon-sighting committee. Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Astronomy Society, noted, “The crescent moon of the month of Ramadan 1446 AH will be born on Friday, February 28, 2025.” This signal marks the last day of the month of Sha'ban, paving the way for the holy month of fasting.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and holds significant importance for Muslims around the world. It is primarily characterized by fasting, prayer, and acts of charity. Observers fast from dawn until sunset, breaking their fast with the evening meal known as iftar, often starting with dates and water before enjoying various traditional dishes.

While the holy month approaches, preparations across the UAE demonstrate the importance of this period. Notably, the fasting hours for 2025 will reportedly be shorter than those of last year, fluctuated between 12 hours and 58 minutes to 13 hours and 13 minutes, which contrasts with previous years when fasting hours extended up to 14 hours. “Fasting hours this year will be shorter as compared to 2024,” highlighted local reports, contributing to the anticipation of Ramadan’s commencement.

Beyond daily fasting, the month alters normal routines, as both government and private sector employees will see adjustments to their work hours during this time. Government employees are expected to work from 9 AM to 2:30 PM Monday to Thursday, with Fridays’ work hours cut shorter to 9 AM to 12 PM. Private sector employees will experience similar reductions, with their workday truncated by two hours. Flexibility measures permit remote work for up to 70 percent of employees under certain circumstances.

Schools, too, adapt to the season, adjusting the standard schedule to accommodate students’ fasting. Students will see their school days cut down to five hours, and many schools are already offering remote learning options. These steps aim to support the well-being of students and their families during Ramadan.

Shopping outlets and supermarkets are also blending their schedules around the holy month, with retailers announcing significant discounts leading up to Ramadan. Residents are encouraged to stock up on essentials as they prepare for the month of fasting and reflection. Ramirez Group noted, “Supermarkets and other retail stores have announced massive discounts before the holy month for shoppers.”

Public behavior also takes center stage as Ramadan approaches, highlighting the need for respect toward those observing the fast. It is expected for individuals to refrain from aggressive behaviors, loud entertainment, and wearing inappropriate clothing during this sacred time. With its diverse community makeup, the UAE emphasizes adherence to cultural sensitivity and etiquette during Ramadan.

Public transport services are adhering to modified schedules during the holy month, with the Dubai Metro and tram services operating on adjusted hours to suit late-night travelers. The metro will run from 5 AM to midnight on weekdays, with extended hours over the weekends. Commuters are encouraged to check the transport authority’s app for up-to-date timings.

The beginning of Ramadan not only marks fasting and prayer but also radiates through communal activities and charity. The anticipation builds throughout the month as families and communities engage more intensely with their spirituality, culminating in the celebratory holiday of Eid Al Fitr, which will follow the month of fasting.

Officials will confirm the exact date for Eid based on the next moon sighting, marking another significant religious celebration. Eid, typically celebrated with feasts and gatherings, reflects the culmination of Ramadan’s hardships and the joyous relief it brings.

With Ramadan 2025 just around the corner, the community prepares for adjustments and reflections on faith, compassion, and charity literally woven through the fabric of the UAE’s society.
