Ramadan 2025 Begins Today Following Crescent Moon Sighting

Muslims worldwide prepare for fasting as moon is sighted confirming the holy month.

The holy month of Ramadan 2025 officially begins today, March 1, following the sighting of the crescent moon, marking a significant occasion for millions of Muslims worldwide. This tradition, rooted deeply within the Islamic lunar calendar, guides the start and end of Ramadan, which revolves around the visibility of the moon.

According to reports from the Saudi authorities, confirmed by the official X handle of Harmain, "The crescent moon has been sighted in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, Ramadhān 1446 will begin tonight." This announcement brings joy and anticipation to the citizens and residents of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as well as Muslims around the globe.

King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia expressed his warm regards to the citizens and congratulated Muslims worldwide as they prepare to observe this sacred month. Meanwhile, the UAE's moon-sighting committee also confirmed the sighting of the Ramadan crescent, setting the date for the first fasting day, which will be observed on Monday, March 3.

The start of Ramadan varies by region; typically, many Middle Eastern and Gulf countries initiate fasting on the day following the sighting of the crescent moon. This year, countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE start their Ramadan observance early on March 1, 2025, after successfully sighting the moon on February 28.

Contrarily, regions such as India and Pakistan often see Ramadan begin one day later, making March 2 their probable start date. This delay is primarily due to differences in local moon sighting practices. Similarly, Muslims residing in Western nations like the United States and the United Kingdom frequently rely on reports from Saudi Arabia or their local religious leaders to confirm the start of Ramadan.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, adhering to the practice known as 'sawm.' They abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs during daylight hours. The fast begins at dawn with the 'Suhoor' meal, which helps the faithful sustain their energy throughout the day. At sunset, families gather to break their fast with 'iftar,' typically starting with dates and water, complemented by the Maghrib prayer.

Throughout this blessed month, acts of worship, including increased prayers and charitable deeds, become central to daily life. The last prayer of the day also encompasses the 'Isha' and 'Taraweeh' prayers, particularly observed during Ramadan nights.

Looking forward, Ramadan will conclude with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of fasting. The festival is expected to occur on March 30 or 31, 2025, contingent upon the subsequent sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon.

Importantly, Ramadan is not simply about abstaining from food and drink; it embodies spirituality and self-reflection. Muslims are reminded of mercy and community, emphasizing the significance of connection with Allah and one another during this period of perseverance and devotion.

With the start date of Ramadan now confirmed, communities are encouraged to remain tuned to announcements from local mosques and Islamic centers, receiving guidance on practices and observations throughout the month.

This year's Ramadan promises to be especially significant for many, as it provides not only the traditional spirit of fasting but also the opportunity for renewal, reflection, and the strengthening of community bonds as families gather for iftar meals and prayers.
