Ramadan 2025 has officially commenced as millions of Muslims around the world prepare for the sacred month beginning March 1. With the crescent moon sighted, communities are engaging in traditional practices, prayer times have been established, and many are reflecting on the month’s significance of faith and dedication.
For Egyptian Muslims, today marks the beginning of daily fasting and prayer routines. The following are the prayer times set for March 1, 2025, at various locations:
- Cairo: Fajr at 4:54 AM, Dhuhr at 12:07 PM, and Maghrib at 5:54 PM.
- Alexandria: Fajr at 4:59 AM, Dhuhr at 12:12 PM, and Maghrib at 5:58 PM.
- Qatar (Doha): Fajr at 4:43 AM and Maghrib at 5:43 PM.
The Cairo observation noted the fasting duration on the first day to be approximately 13 hours and 20 minutes, beginning with the pre-dawn meal known as suhoor, which is encouraged to be taken up to the time of Fajr prayer.
Dr. Mahmoud Al-Tahan, Secretary of the Fatwa House, clarified the importance of adhering to timing: "The correct time for breaking the fast is when hearing the call to prayer for Maghrib directly, not with the cannon shot," emphasizing the sanctity of following the azan closely.
He also advised, "Prefer breaking the fast with dates or water upon hearing the first words of the azan," which is rooted in the traditions established by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The month of Ramadan is not only about fasting but also emphasizes unity, reflection, and prayer. Various Islamic communities around the globe participate fully, with gatherings for nightly prayers or Taraweeh beginning after the Isha prayer, which is set for 7:11 PM today.
While engaging with the traditions, many take time to engage with prayer and seek reconciliation, forgiveness, and internal peace. Ramadan is deeply engrained with values of compassion and charity, prompting numerous initiatives to support the less fortunate.
Amongst other traditions, the dua (supplications) during this month are particularly encouraged, with moments before breaking the fast being one of the times Muslims believe their prayers are accepted. On this first day, many are sharing verses and messages of hope and blessings with one another.
Following the prayers, Muslims will sustain this spirit throughout the month, observing fasts and performing prayers as part of their duty. Engaging with family, the faithful will engage not only physically through fasting but also spiritually through prayer and reflection.
Among the many practices, observing the Suhur meal before Fajr is greatly significant. It is described as both beneficial and fulfilling, with tradition encouraging to leave it until the very last moment before Fajr, allowing for maximum sustenance during the fasting hours.
With the observance of Ramadan, conversations around community welfare and collective support emerge, fostering the spirit of giving which is central to this month. Many initiatives will be undertaking food drives and community support to help those who cannot afford meals throughout the fasting period.
For many participating, Ramadan is not only about personal piety but also shows how collective prayer and fasting can strengthen communal bonds and family ties, allowing people within communities to deepen their faith together.
Looking beyond personal growth, Ramadan serves as the perfect opportunity for believers to engage with broader societal issues. Many Muslims utilize the spirit of this month to grow closer to their communities through acts of goodwill, charity, and outreach programs.
Ramadan 2025 welcomes all to contemplate their blessings and extend their hands to those less fortunate, encouraging reflection on not just personal faith, but also the sanctity of community and togetherness.
This holy month is anticipated to bring joy, spirituality, and growth, as families and communities gather not only for meals but also for prayers, uplifting each other’s spirits and sharing the essence of harmony.
May this Ramadan be filled with mercy, and forgiveness, and inspire everyone to embrace the values of unity and compassion as they navigate the sacred experiences of the month with devotion and sincerity.
Here’s wishing everyone the best and most fulfilling Ramadan possible and may all prayers be answered throughout this blessed month.
