Rainy Weather Expected Across South Korea This Saturday

Strong winds and significant rainfall forecasted, prompting advisories for safety precautions.

On Saturday, May 10, 2025, South Korea is set to experience mostly cloudy weather with rain expected across various regions. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the day will see a significant influence from a low-pressure system moving from the West Sea to the East Sea, leading to widespread precipitation.

The forecast indicates that areas including Gangwon Yeongdong, Chungnam, Jeonbuk inland, Gyeongbuk northern inland, Gyeongbuk northern mountain areas, and Gyeongnam western inland will likely see rain continuing until the evening. In the Seoul metropolitan area and Chungbuk, rain may persist until midnight, while Gangwon Yeongseo could experience rain until the early hours of Sunday, May 11.

Rainfall amounts are projected to be substantial, with estimates suggesting 10-50mm in Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi, and parts of Gangwon, and 10-40mm across the Chungcheong region. Specific forecasts for northern Gyeonggi, the West Sea islands, and the northern inland areas of Gyeongbuk indicate potential rainfall of 5-30mm. Jeju Island is expected to receive between 20-60mm of rain.

The temperatures will also be notably cool for this time of year, with morning lows ranging from 11 to 15 degrees Celsius and afternoon highs between 14 and 21 degrees Celsius. Major cities are expected to see temperatures like Seoul at 12 degrees in the morning and a high of 15 degrees in the afternoon, while Busan may reach up to 19 degrees.

In addition to the rain, strong winds are anticipated, particularly in coastal areas and mountainous regions, where gusts could exceed 70km/h (about 43 mph), and even reach 90km/h (56 mph) in the mountains. This has prompted advisories for potential hazards related to strong winds, which could lead to safety concerns and damage to infrastructure.

Visibility is expected to be significantly reduced in several areas due to fog, particularly along the Jeolla coast, where visibility may drop below 200 meters until noon. In other coastal and inland locations, visibility may be less than 1km. Sea conditions are also expected to be rough, with wave heights projected at 1.0-4.0m in the East Sea and 0.5-3.0m in the West Sea and South Sea.

As the day progresses, the weather is expected to remain unsettled, with further rain likely in the central regions. The Korea Meteorological Administration advises residents to stay updated on weather conditions and exercise caution, especially in areas prone to strong winds and heavy rain.

Looking ahead, the weather on Sunday, May 11, is expected to be mostly cloudy, with morning lows between 9 and 13 degrees Celsius and afternoon highs reaching 18 to 23 degrees Celsius. Some areas, particularly in Gangwon, may see lingering rain early in the morning, followed by scattered showers in the afternoon.

By Monday, May 12, the forecast indicates a return to mostly clear skies across the nation, with temperatures slightly rising. Morning lows will be around 7 to 13 degrees Celsius, while highs could reach between 20 to 26 degrees Celsius.

As the week progresses, the weather is projected to remain generally stable, with temperatures gradually increasing. By Wednesday, May 14, a high-pressure system is expected to bring mostly cloudy conditions, with highs ranging from 21 to 27 degrees Celsius.

In conclusion, as South Korea braces for a rainy Saturday, residents are encouraged to prepare for the weather conditions, especially with the strong winds and potential for significant rainfall. The weather patterns highlight the importance of staying informed and cautious during this transitional period.
