Rafinha Returns To Coritiba After Nearly 20 Years

The veteran right-back is back to lead Coritiba's resurgence and aims to retire with the club he loves.

Coritiba Football Club announced the return of veteran right-back Rafinha, marking the end of nearly two decades since he last donned the club’s colors. The 39-year-old player, whose full name is Marcio Rafael Ferreira de Souza, was officially signed on December 24, 2024, after he chose to leave São Paulo FC, with whom he had reached discussions over contract renewal. The player has chosen to fulfill his long-standing promise to return to the club where he began his professional career.

Rafinha expressed his intentions clearly upon rejoining Coritiba, stating, "I’m back to help Coritiba return to the level it deserves". His emotional ties to Coritiba are strong; he urges the fans to view this as not just a step back but as part of the team’s resurgence. He played for Coritiba from 2004 to 2005 before moving to Schalke 04 for 5 million euros, beginning his transformative career across Europe.

Throughout his career, Rafinha has achieved tremendous success, winning multiple titles across different leagues. Notably, he spent five fruitful years at Schalke 04 and later made history with Bayern Munich, securing seven Bundesliga titles, along with the coveted UEFA Champions League trophy during the 2012-2013 season.

After his time overseas, Rafinha returned to Brazil, where he continued to excel, contributing to Flamengo's victories, including a Copa Libertadores title, followed by stints at Grêmio and São Paulo. His contribution to São Paulo was significant; over three seasons, he helped his team win the Copa do Brasil and two Supercopa titles.

His decision to rejoin Coritiba is not just about playing; the club's management views him as integral to a larger plan to regain the club's former glory. Coach Mozart believes Rafinha's vast experience will be valuable, referring to his leadership qualities and his powerful connection with the supporters. The club is experiencing moments of change, and Rafinha’s presence is expected to serve as both inspiration and guidance for younger players.

Under Rafinha, Coritiba aims to cultivate its identity and push for return to Brazil's top league, especially focusing on upcoming 2025 competitions. "Now is the time to continue writing history and strengthen our team for new victories," read the club’s statement shared on social platforms. Rafinha's role is set to be pivotal, with discussions about his position and expectations already underway before his return to training.

For fans, Rafinha is not just another player; he is seen as the club’s own son, affectionately known as #PiáDoCouto. His return marks the end of his career at the same place it began, allowing him to retire wearing the jersey of the club he holds dear. His commitment to contribute actively beyond his playing days also promises continuity and stability, with plans for involvement at Coritiba following his retirement.

Reflecting on his time at Coritiba, Rafinha commented on social media, stating, "I could never neglect the promise I made when leaving, nearly 20 years ago." This sentiment resonates strongly with fans, contrasting his past experiences with the hope and aspirations surrounding his next chapter at Coritiba.

Rafinha's arrival brings optimism to Coritiba supporters, who are excited to see their beloved player return to lead the charge as the team prepares for the challenges of next year. This is not merely about football; it’s about heritage, identity, and hope as Rafinha reignites the passion of long-time fans.

With the past, present, and future intertwining, Rafinha's return isn’t just about his experience as a player; it symbolizes trust, tradition, and the potential revival of the club's fortunes as fans eagerly await the forthcoming season.

Overall, Rafinha’s return is more than just joining the squad; it's the homecoming of a footballing figure who embodies the spirit of Coritiba, ready to shape the aspirations of the club’s faithful supporters once again.
