Racing Club achieved historic victory by defeating Botafogo 2-0 at the Nilton Santos Olympic Stadium, thereby clinching the Recopa Sudamericana 2025 with an aggregate score of 4-0.
With goals from Matías Zaracho and Bruno Zuculini, the team, under the stewardship of coach Gustavo Costas, showcased their dominance throughout the match. They not only registered this triumph as their first Recopa Sudamericana title but also marked it as their eighth international title overall, solidifying their return to the international limelight after 37 years, with their last conquest being the Supercopa Sudamericana back in 1988.
The match unfolded on February 27, 2025, with Racing initially taking control. The Brazilian side aimed to overturn the 2-0 deficit from the first leg, but it was Racing who dictated terms with their resolute defense and aggressive midfield play. The opening half saw opportunities for both teams, yet it ended scoreless, courtesy of stellar goalkeeping from John of Botafogo and Gabriel Arias of Racing.
Returning from halftime, Zaracho, who had replaced Luciano Vietto, struck first. Just four minutes after the break, he capitalized on a rebound from Gastón Martirena’s shot, launching the ball with precision to net the opening goal and put Racing up 1-0, making the aggregate score 3-0.
Following Zaracho's lead, Zuculini sealed the match seemingly 20 minutes later. Receiving a perfectly timed pass, he controlled the ball and unleashed an unstoppable shot, boosting the score to the final 2-0, and the aggregate to 4-0.
The players were ecstatic, receiving the ultimate praise from their coach, Gustavo Costas, who expressed, “This victory is the most beautiful gift of my life. You have to win both finals to be considered true champions, and my boys delivered exceptional performances.” He also highlighted the team’s commitment to achieving more glory, setting the vision on the upcoming Copa Libertadores.
The celebration was marred slightly by the news of two Racing supporters injured during violent incidents, which necessitated conversations about fan safety at international events. Football enthusiasts, once again drawn to the beautiful game’s unpredictability, witnessed the extraordinary skill and passion exhibited by Racing throughout the match.
Now, having proven their prowess on this continent, the Academy is gearing up for forthcoming challenges and is focused on making significant strides as they enter the 2025 Copa Libertadores.
