Racing Club Claims Historic Recopa Sudamericana Title Against Botafogo

With goals from Zaracho and Zuculini, Racing secures their first title since 1989 after overcoming Brazilian champions at home.

Racing Club de Avellaneda celebrated its first Recopa Sudamericana title after defeating Botafogo 2-0 on February 27, 2025. This victory not only secured the trophy for Racing but also affirmed their dominance, having achieved the same scoreline during the first leg at their home stadium.

The decisive match took place at the Estadio Nilton Santos in Rio de Janeiro, where Racing's Matías Zaracho and Bruno Zuculini scored both goals, sealing the win for the squad coached by Gustavo Costas.

The game began with Botafogo attempting to control the ball, yet it was Racing's Maximiliano Salas who consistently posed threats throughout the first half. Salas had several opportunities to score but was met with strong resistance from Botafogo's goalkeeper, John. Early on, Salas made attempts, including one from the left side which was deflected out for a corner. Following another effort, Adrián Martínez's shot was also denied by John, who was soon recognized as the standout player for Botafogo during the match.

After withstanding Racing's initial pressure, Botafogo sought to respond, coming close to scoring through defender Alexander Barboza, whose header struck the crossbar after getting past Racing's goalkeeper, Gabriel Arias.

To start the second half, Racing made tactical changes, bringing on Zaracho, who had initially been on the bench due to caution issues. Zaracho's impact was immediate as he scored just four minutes after halftime, converting after slotting the ball from inside the box following chaotic defensive play from Botafogo.

John's excellence remained on display, as he deflected several shots away from the goal, keeping Botafogo within reach even after falling behind. Yet Racing's influence proved too great. At the 68-minute mark, Bruno Zuculini added the second goal with a well-placed volley, after receiving the ball from Martirena, making the score 2-0 and 4-0 on aggregate.

Despite Racing's dominant performance, there were attempts from Botafogo to get back on the board, forcing Arias to make more saves, but the scoreline remained unchanged. The victory marked sixteen minutes of celebration from the Racing side before the referee blew the final whistle.

This title is especially sweet for Racing Club fans as the team had previously finished as runners-up in the 1989 Recopa Sudamericana. Their achievement not only concluded the tournament but also highlighted the resurgence of the team following recent success, with their win adding to their growing international reputation. They now sit proudly among the ranks of past champions, nourished by their consistent performance on the field.

According to Racing’s coach, Gustavo Costas, the win is emblematic of the team's effort throughout the tournament, noting, "Our players showed heart and determination every step of the way. We’ve paved the way for more successes to come." This feeling of accomplishment resonates deeply within the clubs and supporters universally.

Fans celebrated the victory for its significance, not only adding another trophy to Racing’s cabinet but also for beating Botafogo, the reigning Copa Libertadores champions, on their home ground. This underpins Racing's competitive spirit as they continue to build on their legacy. The triumph is seen as part of Racing’s resurgence on the continent, and supporters are hopeful this marks the beginning of new triumphs.

The thrilling encounter was viewed by thousands, broadcast live across multiple platforms, reflecting the growing interest and excitement surrounding South American football.

With this latest victory, Racing Club has taken its place as the 23rd champion of the Recopa Sudamericana, enhancing its legacy within the region's football history.
