Rabadan Festival 2025 Off To Extraordinary Start

Thousands gather to celebrate tradition and community spirit as the 162nd edition kicks off.

The Rabadan Festival 2025, now underway, has started with remarkable success, reportedly captivating thousands and marking its 162nd edition with festivities reflecting the rich culture and community spirit of Bellinzona.

The event launched on Thursday, February 27, 2025, with the traditional ceremony of handing over the keys to the carnival, drawing approximately 30,000 attendees to the historic center. According to the Rabadan Society, this extraordinary start involved a vibrant atmosphere marked by enjoyment and festivity, without any significant incidents, showcasing excellent organization and safety measures.

On the opening evening, the heart of the celebrations pulsed around the Capannone Eventi at Piazza del Sole, where various attractions kicked off, including the Pranzo del Cuore (Heart Lunch), which served nearly 900 meals. This event not only offered sumptuous traditional dishes but also reflected the warmth and participation of the community.

Friday, February 28, focussed on the traditional lunch for the elderly, again reaching full capacity. This year’s menu included over 80 kg of risotto and the beloved luganighetta, catering to around 930 guests, complemented by live music performances from artists Toto Cavadini and Deborah, which added to the jubilant ambiance.

Saturday, March 1, marked the much-anticipated children’s parade, which finally made its debut after the previous year's cancellation due to poor weather conditions. With sunny skies and temperatures exceeding 15 degrees Celsius, around 3,000 children from more than 25 schools took to the streets, consisting of over 200 classes, bringing color and joy to the city.

Saturday also celebrated the festive spirit of the Guggen bands, which have become synonymous with the Rabadan Festival. A total of 15 ensembles paraded along Viale Stazione, including international groups hailing from various regions of Switzerland and abroad. This vibrant gathering not only entertained but also showcased the diverse musical traditions of the participants.

The climax of Saturday's events included the inaugural concert of the Guggen on the steps of Piazza Collegiata, marking the first time this highly anticipated performance took place there. This unique spectacle concluded Saturdays activities with crowds captivated by the lively and spirited performances.

The Rabadan Society reminds festival-goers to purchase tickets online via their website, www.rabadan-tickets.ch, to avoid long queues and enjoy the free public transport included with each ticket. The vibrant atmosphere of the festival promises more exciting events forthcoming, as the celebrations are set to continue throughout the week.
