Queyras Community Unites For Menstrual Health And Agricultural Pride

Local initiatives tackle menstrual poverty and promote regional cheese at the Agriculture Fair.

The Hautes-Alpes region is taking significant strides to address various social and cultural challenges through community initiatives and local events. Recently, the Communauté de Communes du Guillestrois-Queyras and the town of Guillestre mobilized for the collection of feminine hygiene products, highlighting the pressing issue of menstrual poverty.

This initiative, which partners with the collège des Hautes-Vallées, the intercommunal Office de Tourisme, the CIDFF, and the local supermarkets Intermarché and Carrefour Market, aims to provide support for those affected by this often-overlooked aspect of social disparity. According to Magali Héritier, the CISP coordinator, "One woman out of three faces menstruation poverty in France." This translates to about four million women and menstruators lacking access to necessary menstrual products as per the latest governmental statistics.

The need for such assistance was urged by charitable organizations including Secours Populaire, Croix Rouge, and Restos du Cœur, which emphasized the often-ignored difficulties faced by women daily. Camille, one of the local contributors to the drive, shared her view: "That should be something reimbursed according to me. Today, many people struggle to make ends meet." Her sentiment reflects the broader financial burdens many experience, underscoring the necessity of these products.

Interestingly, the collection also witnessed support beyond women. Men from the community have made donations, helping to dismantle the stigma surrounding menstrual health. Local students have pitched in as well, particularly during their lunch break, contributing to the effort under the guidance of their supervisor, Valentine. She points out the importance of this initiative, stating, "Sometimes with parents, they’re embarrassed to buy them. It's still taboo in some families." This involvement not only assists those in need but also serves as an educational opportunity for the youth, encouraging discussions on gender equality.

Competitively, the region's cultural scene was also showcased at the Salon International de l'Agriculture. Alexandre Lagier, manager of the fromagerie de Château-Queyras and president of the association Bleu du Queyras, participated to promote their unique cheese aiming for Protected Designation of Origin (AOP) status. Lagier expressed hopes for the recognition commanding the region's culinary excitement, "We hope to conquer the AOP for this cheese from the Hautes-Alpes." This endeavor highlights the richness of the local agricultural heritage and its significance for community identity.

The fair provided not just visibility but also highlighted the gastronomic importance of the Queyras region, which is rich with pastoral beauty and traditions reflected through its artisanal products. Visitors at the fair tasted the distinct flavors of the region, making conscious connections between local agriculture and sustainable food practices.

Meanwhile, for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers, Queyras remains an alluring destination for tranquil escapes. Nestled among towering peaks and breathtaking landscapes, the region offers stunning hiking opportunities, exemplified by excursions starting from Ceillac. The potential for discovery beckons visitors to immerse themselves, experiencing the picturesque valleys and pristine natural beauty. A recent report captured the essence of these adventures: "Here, nature offers sumptuous landscapes, and the calm of the flight makes us quickly forget the sails above our heads and the skis at our feet."

Combined, these community-driven initiatives and cultural happenings paint a vibrant picture of life in the Hautes-Alpes—where addressing societal needs intermingles with celebrating local traditions. Each effort informs the collective narrative of resilience, generosity, and harmony with nature prevalent within this alpine community.

The endeavors in Guillestre serve not only to meet immediate needs but also to challenge social norms—promoting awareness around menstruation and encouraging communal support. Likewise, showcasing regional produce at events like the International Agriculture Fair fosters pride within the community, enhancing its economic viability. The allure of Queyras as both a natural haven and cultural hub continues to grow, inviting all to partake and contribute to its unique narrative.
