Queens Walk Triumphs At Kinshiko Sho, Making History

The four-year-old filly earns her third graded stakes victory, becoming first mare to win the race since 1995.

On March 16, 2025, at Chukyo Racecourse, Queens Walk, ridden by Yuga Kawada, triumphed at the 61st Kinshiko Sho (GII), marking her third graded stakes victory. The four-year-old filly managed to secure the win by just a head over the heavily favored Hooo Paradise, closely contested until the finish line. The victorious mare finished the race with a winning time of 2 minutes and 1.3 seconds on heavy ground.

Queens Walk’s victory is especially significant as it is the first time in 30 years for a filly to win the Kinshiko Sho, the last being Samani Beppin in 1995. The win adds to Queens Walk's impressive pedigree; she is by Kizuna and out of Wavebell Avenue, with her lineage also featuring Harlington. This race demonstrated her potential, especially after her previous two races had not yielded any wins. It is seen as a strong comeback for the talented mare, reinforcing her abilities against male competitors.

The race saw Desierto, who was placed second for betting odds, setting off at a blistering pace, leading by over ten lengths at one point during the race. This aggressive strategy, described as a front-running tactic, not only set the race's rhythm but also created opportunities for the competitors trailing behind to make their moves. Despite Desierto's impressive lead, Queens Walk's strong finish showcased her determination and skill, overtaking Hooo Paradise mere moments before the finish line.

Kawada commented on the win, expressing his gratitude for Queens Walk’s performance, stating, “I felt this horse was not suited to the ground conditions. She chose to move at her own pace, and I respected her feel throughout the race. The atmosphere was great, and when she surged forward, I felt confident.” Kawada has now achieved his fifth overall win at this prestigious race, establishing his position as one of the most successful riders at the Kinshiko Sho.

Trainer Mitsumasa Nakauchida also celebrated the victory, marking his fourth win overall and coinciding with his third successive victory, which aligns him with the top trainers historically for the event. Nakauchida expressed his satisfaction with the performance, acknowledging the training and effort it took to prepare Queens Walk for this challenge.

The order of finish on this notable day was finalized as follows: Queens Walk took first place, Hooo Paradise came second, followed by Kings Palace who finished third, and Desierto rounding out the top four. With this win, Queens Walk earned priority entry to the Osaka Hai (G1), set for April 6, 2025, which will continue to spotlight her talents on larger platforms.

Queens Walk's overall record now stands impressively at four wins from nine starts. Her progression to the top tier of racing competitions is clear as she showcases her impressive genetics and skill on the track. Details surrounding the Kinshiko Sho will continue to evolve as the racing season progresses, with fans eagerly anticipating her next performance and the possible influence it may have on her racing career.
