Quebec Braces For Weekend Weather Cocktail Of Snow And Ice

Environment Canada warns of significant snowfall and freezing rain across the province as a storm system approaches.

As the weekend approaches, Quebecers are bracing for a significant weather event that could bring a mix of heavy snowfall and freezing rain across various regions. Environment Canada has issued special weather bulletins detailing the arrival of a depression from the American Midwest, which is expected to reach the Great Lakes on Friday, March 28, 2025.

This weather system will move toward Lake Ontario by Saturday morning, March 29, 2025, potentially delivering substantial snowfall, particularly in areas stretching from Témiscamingue to Estrie, including Montreal. According to Environment Canada, the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region is under a snow squall watch, with officials warning that "visibility could suddenly reduce to near zero."

Travel conditions are likely to be dangerous due to both the snow squalls and plunging temperatures below freezing. Environment Canada has indicated that while snow is expected, it may turn to sleet at times, which could help lessen overall snow accumulation. However, the trajectory of the storm remains uncertain, leaving many residents on edge about the impending weather.

In Gatineau, residents are warned to prepare for what could be a significant spring ice storm, with forecasts predicting an accumulation of 5 to 15 mm of freezing rain, and possibly exceeding 20 mm in some areas. The federal agency also pointed out that sleet is likely, which could lead to power outages and hazardous road conditions. Motorists are advised to exercise caution as surfaces are expected to be particularly slippery.

Before the storm hits, Quebec will enjoy a brief respite, with sunny skies expected on Thursday, March 27, 2025. In Montreal, temperatures are anticipated to reach a pleasant 7 degrees Celsius, although snowfall will linger in western Quebec, particularly in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, where 2 to 4 centimeters of snow is expected.

The central regions of the province will experience clearing weather, with comfortable temperatures around 5 degrees. However, some flurries are still predicted in Estrie. The federal agency has also forecasted a few snow showers without significant accumulation in eastern Quebec, where temperatures will remain above freezing, peaking at 3 degrees, and even dropping to 1 degree on the North Shore.

As Friday approaches, temperatures across Quebec are expected to dip slightly, with clouds beginning to roll in. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the changing weather conditions as they prepare for what could be a challenging weekend ahead.
