Quang Nam Province Experiences Series Of Minor Earthquakes

Local experts monitor seismic activity and provide safety tips for residents following the recent quakes.

Multiple minor earthquakes rocked Quang Nam Province on February 22, 2025, raising concerns among residents and local authorities about seismic safety.

The first quake, measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale, occurred at exactly 8:23:16 AM, with its epicenter located at coordinates 15.196°N and 108.045°E. It struck at a depth of approximately 8.1 km near the Nam Tra My district. Just over an hour later, at 9:29:05 AM, another earthquake was recorded, this time at 3.0 magnitude, occurring at the same depth and location. Fortunately, both earthquakes were classified under risk level 0, indicating no significant threat to public safety.

The Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Center, part of the Institute of Geophysics, closely monitored the seismic activity and released statements to keep the public informed. According to the center's director, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, the area has experienced several minor earthquakes recently, but their magnitudes have remained under 5.0.

Dr. Anh emphasized, "The earthquakes had magnitudes not exceeding 5.0, and so far, there is no heightened risk level for the area." This reassurance, though welcome, does not lessen the significance of the quakes, especially considering the potential impacts of even minor seismic activities.

When it came to the unpredictability of earthquakes, Dr. Anh stated, "Currently, no country can predict exactly when or how earthquakes will occur." This sentiment highlights the challenges faced by seismologists and emphasizes the importance of preparedness for residents living in earthquake-prone regions.

Interestingly, Dr. Anh pointed out the nature of earthquake damage, explaining, "The only way to mitigate earthquake damage is through preparedness." This includes community drills, resident education on safe practices during quakes, and structural assessments of buildings to withstand seismic forces.

Residents are advised to take appropriate precautions during such natural events. Dr. Anh recommends remaining calm and knowing how to respond during tremors: if inside, take shelter under sturdy furniture or stay near solid walls; if outside, steer clear of buildings and utilities, and find open ground; and if driving, pull over to the side of the road and wait until the shaking stops.

Quang Nam has experienced its share of natural disasters over the years, making awareness and preparedness even more important. The recent earthquakes may have been mild, but they serve as reminders of the persistent natural forces at play. Local authorities and the Institute of Geophysics are committed to continuing their monitoring efforts to keep the public informed of any significant seismic activity.

The community must remain vigilant, as the safety measures introduced by experts and local officials help dampen the potential risks involved with earthquakes. Preparedness just might be the key to mitigating the effects of future seismic events. Public safety is everyone’s responsibility, and knowing how to act during tremors can save lives.

Through awareness and education, the residents of Quang Nam can navigate these unpredictable elements of nature together, making their community safer.
