Quang Binh Unveils Adventure At Nightmare Sinkhole

Tourists can now enjoy zip lining over the depths of Vietnam's intriguing sinkhole

The Quang Binh region of Vietnam, known for its stunning natural landscapes and caves, has unveiled its latest adventure tourism offering: the 'Nightmare' sinkhole. Standing at approximately 250 meters deep, this fascinating formation is part of the Hung Thoòng cave system and was discovered by Jungle Boss, an adventure tourism company, back in 2016.

Identified as one of the two locations named 'Nightmare'—the first being a cave discovered in 2007—this sinkhole has gained the notorious reputation of being difficult to access. According to Le Luu Dung, the Director of Jungle Boss, the only way to enter and exit this harrowing sinkhole is by descending and then ascending back using ropes. He elaborated, "The only way to exit the sinkhole is by climbing back up the rope, unlike other sinkholes which have exits at the bottom." This exclusive access is part of what makes this location so appealing to thrill-seekers.

While fewer than ten adventurers have successfully reached the depths of the Nightmare sinkhole, efforts to make it accessible to more visitors have been underway. The latest development is the installation of a zip line, which was first put to use on February 28, 2025. This zip line offers tourists the opportunity to glide across and view the sinkhole from above—a feat Dung proudly described as, "the first zip line system through a natural sinkhole here in Vietnam."

Jungle Boss provides tours which combine this aerial adventure with exploration of the Hung Thoòng caves, making for an unparalleled tourism package. Currently, the cost for this thrilling experience is approximately 12 million VND per person. Dung stated, "We're excited to provide experiences for adventure enthusiasts who wish to embrace this breathtaking yet challenging environment."

Although the newly offered zip line setup allows for stunning views of the sinkhole, climbing straight down remains too perilous. This is because ascending the rope again requires significant physical strength and skill, which adds another layer to the adventure. Dung shared, "The name 'Nightmare' was born from the exhausting and challenging expeditions of explorers," highlighting the demanding nature of these explorations.

The design of the zip line incorporates advanced safety measures, ensuring the wellbeing of those partaking. With three international standard stainless steel cables capable of handling up to 7 tons each, the setup is aimed at minimizing any risk. Dung reassured aspiring visitors, "Every component has been inspected and approved by the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, ensuring safety on this adventure."

Many explorers and adventurers view the Nightmare sinkhole as one of the last frontiers waiting to be unveiled. “It's one of the large mysteries of Phong Nha - Kẻ Bàng and there are many more secrets to explore and discover,” Dung emphasized. With its combination of nature's beauty and the thrill of adventure, the sinkhole is likely to attract many more visitors eager to experience its depths.

Such adventurous tourism activities highlight not just the breathtaking geological features of the Quang Binh region but also the growing interest among travelers for more challenging experiences. The developments around the Nightmare sinkhole reflect this trend, providing safety without compromising the excitement of exploration.

With substantial interest and excitement surrounding this latest adventure offering, the Nightmare sinkhole is setting the stage for Quang Binh to become even more prominent on the global adventure tourism map. Visitors to the area can look forward to rugged terrain, adrenaline-pumping activities, and the chance to witness natural wonders from unparalleled perspectives—all of which converge at the captivating Nightmare sinkhole.
