Qatar has recently reaffirmed its commitment to international cooperation through several key initiatives, spotlighting its role on the global stage.
Represented by its Permanent Mission to the United Nations, Qatar deposited the instrument of ratification for a $10 million Contribution Agreement with the United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS). This agreement aims to bolster the Doha Programme of Action (2023-2031), emphasizing Qatar's unwavering commitment to global development and support for the world’s most vulnerable populations.
The event saw the participation of notable figures including H.E. Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN, H.E. Fahad Al Sulaiti, the Director General of the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), and H.E. Rabab Fatima, the UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for OHRLLS. During the occasion, Sheikha Alya emphasized, “This Contribution Agreement reflects Qatar’s steadfast commitment to global development and collective action to support the most vulnerable groups, creating lasting change, and leaving no one behind.”
The Director General of QFFD added, “This contribution embodies Qatar’s strong commitment to enhancing global solidarity, sustainable development, and enabling the least developed countries to overcome their challenges and achieve their full potential.” The partnership with the UN aims to implement impactful programs, with specific focus areas on poverty eradication and climate change adaptation.
On another front, Qatar has stressed the importance of cultural collaboration at the 13th Conference of Ministers of Culture in the Islamic World, held in Jeddah. The conference discussed the significant impacts of culture on socio-economic development. Qatar's delegation, led by Dr. Ghanim bin Mubarak Al Ali, Assistant Undersecretary for Cultural Affairs, highlighted the need for cultural systems to keep pace with rapid global changes. Dr. Al Ali noted, “The aspirations of Islamic societies for progress and advancement require addressing current challenges.”
Qatar has consistently sought to strengthen the cultural ties within the Islamic world, advocating for initiatives associated with the Doha Declaration, which emphasizes the protection and digitization of cultural heritage. The conference’s discussions focused on various guiding documents, including ICESCO’s initiative on cultural rights and the right to culture, alongside reports on the achievements within the cultural domain by member states.
Meanwhile, Qatar is actively engaged as one of the mediators attempting to stabilize the delicate ceasefire situation in Gaza. Talks involving Hamas and Egyptian representatives are underway as international efforts to sustain the ceasefire continue. These discussions aim at ensuring compliance from both sides to the ceasefire agreement and address humanitarian concerns arising from the conflict.
A Hamas delegation, led by Khalil al-Hayya, has arrived in Cairo to engage with Egyptian mediators. Both Qatar and Egypt are pivotal players working to prevent the collapse of the ceasefire. Israeli authorities have communicated their willingness to uphold the ceasefire, conditional on Hamas adhering to its commitments, highlighting the fragile nature of the situation.
Hamas spokesperson Abdul Latif al-Qanou stated, “We are determined to implement the ceasefire and compel the occupation to fully comply.” He conveyed the group's readiness to support humanitarian provisions, showcasing the urgency of international oversight to sustain peace.
Further bolstering its diplomatic pursuits, Qatar has been fostering strong ties with Rwanda, characterized by significant agreements spanning various sectors, including aviation, culture, and economic cooperation. The two nations have seen accelerated interactions since establishing diplomatic relations back in 2017. They have collaborated on numerous projects, including infrastructure development and cultural exchanges, aiming to serve mutual interests.
Both countries have signed agreements covering areas such as air transport, with Qatar Airways establishing new routes to facilitate travel and trade between Doha and Kigali. The collaboration extends to financial partnerships, focusing on enhancing investment opportunities and promoting economic growth within both nations. This burgeoning relationship captures Qatar's strategic policy of openness and cooperation with African nations.
Rwandan President Paul Kagame has praised Qatar's development model, noting the potential for mutual benefit through enhanced economic ties. He remarked on Qatar’s exemplary development path, encouraging with gratitude the joint pursuit of improved cultural and economic initiatives. The accords signed also address defense cooperation, signaling Qatar’s comprehensive approach to building strategic partnerships with nations like Rwanda.
