Qatar is on the brink of significant advancements in its tourism and hospitality sectors as it gears up for expansion in 2025, capitalizing on its recent successes and global appeal. A report by ValuStrat indicates the introduction of approximately 1,100 hotel keys to the Qatari market within the upcoming year, signifying the country's ambitious plans to accommodate the rising number of visitors drawn to its shores.
According to Qatar Tourism, the total hospitality stock stood at 39,828 keys at the close of the fourth quarter of 2024, with 67% of these being upscale four to five-star hotels. Remarkably, Qatar has seen its average hotel occupancy soar to 67%, reflecting a 15% increase since the previous year. The Average Daily Rate (ADR) for hotels was reported at QR428—an increase of 5% year-on-year—while the Revenue per Available Room (RevPAR) reached QR285, marking a significant 21% rise. This surge is indicative of Qatar's effective positioning as a desirable year-round destination, attracting tourists consistently.
The last quarter of 2024 showcased particularly strong numbers, with visitor counts surpassing 5 million, demonstrating a 25% year-over-year increase. Travelers from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations represented 41% of arrivals, reflecting regional interest bolstered by strategic promotions and events.
Meanwhile, Qatar's retail segment reported stability with no significant new additions during the fourth quarter, maintaining 5.5 million square meters of gross leasable area. Nevertheless, the soft opening of the Doha Mall was notable, featuring 250 retail outlets with key anchors like LuLu Hypermarket and Jarir Bookstore already operational. Despite the positive retail outlook, median monthly rents for shopping centers saw minor declines of 2% and 6% compared to the previous quarter and year, respectively.
Qatar's office segment showed stabilized average monthly rents, pegged at QR66 per square meter, even as construction delays postponed significant expansions initially expected for late 2024. According to ValuStrat, around 170,000 square meters of new office space should be added by 2025.
Here’s where things get especially exciting: by January 20, 2025, Qatar's cruise tourism sector is set to welcome soaring numbers as well. This sector reported the arrival of 53 cruise ships, bringing 191,944 passengers to its shores, including 20,951 who began their journeys from Doha.
Germany led the charge, accounting for 30.2% of total arrivals, followed closely by Russia at 10.8% and Italy at 9.2%. This season saw the maiden visitation of four notable cruise ships, including Resorts World One, MSC Euribia, Celestyal Journey, and Costa Smeralda, enhancing Qatar’s profile as a burgeoning cruise destination.
Looking forward, the cruise agenda also includes the much-anticipated docking of the Norwegian Sky on April 12, 2025, which is poised to ramp up Qatar’s cruise activity even more. Notably, the Costa Smeralda is expected to make ten calls this season alone, potentially bringing around 82,000 passengers.
Doha Port's strategic location facilitates easy access for visitors to the city’s iconic landmarks like the National Museum of Qatar and Souq Waqif, underscoring the importance of the cruise sector within Qatar’s tourism strategy. The Grand Cruise Terminal stands out with its blend of traditional Arabian architecture and modern amenities, reflecting the country’s commitment to world-class hospitality.
For food enthusiasts, Qatar will also host the Qatar International Food Festival (QIFF) from February 12 to 22, 2025, aiming to present an impressive array of culinary influences and experiences. Held at Hotel Park Doha, this year's festival expects to be the biggest yet, featuring over 100 local vendors and 27 international dining experiences.
Top-tier sponsors such as Ooredoo, Snoonu, and Qatar Airways are backing this event, which promises exciting food challenges, workshops, and live entertainment aimed at engaging attendees of all ages. The festival embodies Qatar's vision of showcasing its cultural and culinary richness, with thousands of visitors expected to represent both local and global audiences.
Overall, Qatar's tourism and hospitality sectors are set to flourish as the nation makes strategic strides toward becoming a premier global travel destination. By enhancing its infrastructure and promoting diverse attractions—from luxury hotels and vibrant retail spaces to innovative cruise experiences and culinary festivals—Qatar is not only prepared to host millions of visitors each year but also to offer them unforgettable experiences.
