Qatar Launches Comprehensive Heritage Preservation Strategies

Innovative initiatives aim to safeguard cultural assets for future generations.

DOHA: Qatar is placing significant emphasis on the preservation of its rich cultural heritage through the launch of innovative strategies aimed at safeguarding both its historical documents and archaeological sites. On February 27, 2025, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani inaugurated the National Archives of Qatar (NAQ) strategy for 2025-2030, under the theme "Memory of the Future." This ambitious plan seeks not only to preserve the nation's documentary heritage but also to enrich its role as a knowledge hub, capable of supporting decision-making and formulating public policy.

The strategy was revealed at the NAQ headquarters, which was inaugurated by Amir H.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on January 16, 2024. Key figures present included Chairman of the Board of Trustees of NAQ, H.E. Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Attiyah, and Secretary-General of NAQ, Dr. Ahmed Abdullah Al Buainain. Dr. Al Buainain emphasized the importance of documents as foundational elements for decision-making and strategic planning, noting, "Documents are one of the essentials of decision-making and strategic planning. Through our new strategy, we aim to transform them from mere records to knowledge resources supporting institutions and researchers."

The NAQ strategy aims to digitize and preserve the wealth of Qatar’s documentary heritage, implementing modern solutions compliant with global best practices. Saba Al Fadala, a strategic expert at the archives, reinforced the alignment of the strategy with Qatar National Vision 2030, stating, "This strategy is the result of continuous dialogue with institutions and private library owners, ensuring its practical approach meets national needs."

Al Fadala highlighted four strategic projects within the larger framework: the International Documentation Project, the Institutional Documentation Project, the Community Documentation Project, and the Oral History Project. These initiatives use innovative mechanisms to maximize the value of archived records, reflecting the National Archives’ commitment to improving access to knowledge and supporting sustainable development.

Adding to the technological dimension of the initiative, Eng. Dalal Al Shammari, Director of the Information Systems Department, discussed the collaboration between the National Archives and Microsoft, which introduced cutting-edge digital frameworks. One notable initiative is the Journalistic Documentation Project, which digitizes Qatari journalistic content, enhancing researchers' access. Another is the Silica Data Storage Project, utilizing glass plates to store records, ensuring longevity and reducing environmental impact.

Alongside these strides for terrestrial heritage preservation, Qatar Museums' Cultural Heritage Protection department has taken proactive measures for its marine heritage. On the same day as the archives strategy launch, they announced the installation of an innovative trash boom at Al Zubarah Archaeological Site, Qatar’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. The launch ceremony was attended by various dignitaries including the Chairperson of Qatar Museums, H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, and CEO Mohammed Saad Al Rumaihi.

CEO Al Rumaihi stated, "The Al Zubarah Trash Boom Project exemplifies Qatar Museums’ dedication to preserving our cultural heritage through innovative and sustainable solutions. Our mission is to protect and preserve unique heritage sites throughout the country and to pass on appreciation for the history and culture they embody to future generations."

The trash boom, developed with aid from the Ras Laffan Consortium, effectively tackles the persistent issue of marine waste impacting Al Zubarah beach. Director Abdullatif Al Jasmi commented on the project's significance, stating, "This innovative solution not only protects our World Heritage Site but also raises awareness about plastic pollution on our oceans." He expressed gratitude for the support received from the Ras Laffan Industrial City Community Outreach Program, which played a key role in launching this initiative.

The trash boom consists of floating barriers linked together along the shore, significantly mitigating the need for constant beach cleanups. The system has added features: materials collected from the boom will be recycled for local uses, and its anchors will double as artificial reefs to bolster marine biodiversity.

The dual focus on terrestrial and marine heritage preservation signifies Qatar’s comprehensive approach to safeguarding its cultural assets, ensuring both historical significance and natural beauty are maintained. The recent initiatives demonstrate the country's commitment to sustainability, innovation, and the responsible stewardship of its cultural heritage. The successful integration of historical preservation with environmental conservation puts Qatar on the map as a leader among nations committed to saving their unique legacies.
