Qatar Elevates Culinary Scene With Taste Program

New Taste of Qatar initiative sets dining standards and enhances tourist experiences.

Doha is rapidly establishing itself as one of the premier culinary destinations worldwide, with recent initiatives aiming to improve dining experiences and showcase the nation's rich culinary diversity.

On February 13, Qatar Tourism launched the ‘Taste of Qatar’ program, which aims to evaluate and upgrade the dining experience across the nation’s restaurant sector. Partnering with global research firm Ipsos and the Ministry of Public Health, this initiative combines assessments of front-of-house service with rigorous evaluations of back-of-house hygiene and safety, creating a comprehensive public rating system for restaurants.

Chief of Tourism Development at Qatar Tourism, Omar Al Jaber, emphasized the program's significance, stating, "The launch of Taste of Qatar... raise the standard of dining across the country." He noted the initiative is part of broader efforts to position Doha as a culinary powerhouse globally.

The 'Taste of Qatar' program evaluates restaurants based on several categories including fine dining, casual dining, and quick-service eateries. Under this rating system, exceptional establishments can earn prestigious 3-star certifications, garnering increased visibility on Qatar Tourism platforms and attracting both local and international guests.

"At Ipsos, we are proud to contribute our expertise to Taste of Qatar. By applying global benchmarking methodologies, we make sure the evaluation process is rigorous and aligned with international best practices," stated Panicos Ioannides, CEO, GCC at Ipsos. He added, “This approach gives restaurants actionable insights to improve their service quality and guest experiences.”

Bahaa Barakat, Managing Director at Ipsos, elaborated on the program's capabilities, mentioning, "The programme follows global strategies... improve customer satisfaction and operational standards." This systematic evaluation is bundled with training programs aimed at supporting restaurant operators to refine service delivery and uphold quality standards.

The 'Taste of Qatar' launch coincided with the Qatar International Food Festival, taking place from February 12-22 at Hotel Park Doha. This popular culinary festival showcases hundreds of food vendors and features cuisines from around the globe, reinforcing Qatar's status as a hub for food enthusiasts.

The festival boasts over 100 food kiosks and 20 international chefs, including those who have been recognized by the esteemed Michelin Guide. Guests will have the opportunity to taste various dishes, learn culinary skills through workshops, and enjoy live performances. Attractions include themed food experiences, competitions, and interactive cooking demonstrations.

This celebration of gastronomy is expected to draw large crowds, with organizers planning activities to engage all attendees, including those interested in cooking, entertainment, and tasting international dishes. The festival is sure to highlight Doha’s vibrant culinary scene, showcasing its diversity through both local and international flavors.

Among the headlining events will be the Michelin Guide Village which allows food lovers to savor exclusive dishes prepared by Michelin-starred chefs. With brands such as Soulfly Chicken and PHAT Buns participating, the festival will cater to both street food aficionados and fine dining enthusiasts alike.

The Qatar International Food Festival is set against the backdrop of Doha's impressive skyline, making it not only tastefully appealing but visually stunning as well. Visitors can also participate in family-friendly activities and competitions, adding to the festival's festive atmosphere.

One of the key organizers expressed excitement for this year's event, explaining, “The festival offers something for everyone, from culinary arts to entertainment, fostering community spirit and enhancing Qatar’s cultural identity.”

Despite being steeped in tradition, Qatar is invigorated by countries' contemporary culinary movements. These initiatives, including the 'Taste of Qatar' program and the Qatar International Food Festival, are instrumental in enhancing the country’s culinary reputation on the global stage.

Through these efforts, Qatar aims not only to improve its culinary offerings but to boost its tourism sector considerably. The National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030 envisions attracting millions of visitors annually, highlighting gastronomy as one of the pivotal segments for tourists.

With such ambitious goals, Qatar's culinary and tourism sectors are closely intertwined. The introduction of programs such as 'Taste of Qatar' will undoubtedly raise dining standards and global recognition, drawing food enthusiasts from around the world to experience the country's rich culinary heritage and modern dining innovations.
