New Jersey-based hardcore punk band Gel has announced their breakup due to serious allegations against former guitarist Anthony Webster, whose actions have resulted in what the band describes as "irreparable damage." The announcement, made on March 19, 2025, via social media, cited Webster's alleged theft of tens of thousands of dollars from the band’s account and misuse of funds on personal expenditures.
Gel, formed in 2018, originally emerged as a side project by members of the band Sick Shit. The current lineup included vocalist Sami Kaiser, guitarist Madison Nave, bassist Matthew Bobko, and drummer Alex Salter. Webster, who had been a member since the band’s inception, faced accusations that have led to the dissolution of what many fans considered a rapidly rising group.
According to the band, the allegations against Webster started with his unauthorized access to the band’s bank account, where he allegedly drained funds that were meant for the group’s expenses. "He spent it on his own rent, personal food orders, and really whatever else he wanted," Gel stated in their post. Furthermore, the band claimed he squandered the money on an “unbelievable number of OnlyFans purchases and mysterious CashApp transactions,” raising eyebrows among both fans and industry insiders alike.
The issues escalated when the band accused Webster of posting nude images of fellow band members on Reddit, a violation of trust that further strained relations within the group. The social media post went on to highlight these violations, mentioning how Webster’s actions contributed to putting the group in "physically dangerous situations"—including a vandalism incident where their van’s window was smashed.
In their lengthy and heartfelt statement, the band also drew parallels between their struggles with Webster and those faced in abusive relationships, emphasizing that exiting the arrangement was not straightforward. “If you've ever been in an abusive relationship, emotionally and/or physically, you’ll probably understand this better,” the statement read. “It's like that, but with your life's work and passion at the forefront as well.”
Gel’s decision to terminate their music career comes on the heels of significant momentum. Despite the turmoil, they had planned to perform alongside Spiritbox and Volbeat in high-profile shows throughout 2025, including a coveted spot at Coachella. Just days before the announcement, they had completed a successful tour in Australia and were positioned to participate in a series of European gigs.
“We’re sorry that we have to end it this way and we truly hope for the best for all of you,” they wrote, apologizing to their fans and other bands who were affected by their decision, including those with whom they were scheduled to tour. The band reassured their supporters of their gratitude for the years spent creating music together, stating, “Thank you to the friends we’ve made over the years and thank you so much to our fans for always being there for us.”
Gel’s music left a mark within the punk community, characterized by their intense sound and compelling lyrics. Their discography features one full-length album, Only Constant (2023), and several EPs, including Persona (2024). Despite their short run, they garnered the attention of major bands, as evidenced by their collaborations and future tour scheduling.
The abrupt dissolution of Gel serves as a reminder of the underlying complexities within the music industry, where personal conflicts can significantly impact artistic partnerships. Fans and critics alike will undoubtedly reflect on both the musicians' journey and the lessons learned from this chapter in Gel’s story.
