Publix is set to kick off its 44th annual Torch Campaign, continuing its dedicated partnership with Procter & Gamble to support Special Olympics athletes across Florida. This year’s campaign will begin on Friday, January 10, 2024, and run through January 19, with fundraising activities taking place at selected Publix locations including Marathon, Islamorada, Key Largo, and Key West.
The Publix Torch Campaign is one of the largest fundraisers for Special Olympics, offering customers the opportunity to donate at the register. Contributions can start as low as $1 or can be for specific amounts, encouraging patrons to aid local athletes and help cover various expenses, particularly travel-related costs.
“At Publix, our mission is to be involved as responsible citizens within our communities,” said Dwaine Stevens, Publix Director of Community Relations. “Our support of Special Olympics began 44 years ago, recognizing their impact as a means to build strong communities then, and this legacy continues today.”
Not only does Publix share its commitment through fundraising, but the company also actively employs over 800 Special Olympics athletes across its seven-state operating territory. Stevens emphasizes, “We offer our athletes more than just a job — we offer a fulfilling career and an extension of family.”
All donations made at Publix stores within Monroe County will benefit local Keys Special Olympic athletes. These contributions help provide year-round sports training, competition, and various health services to individuals with intellectual disabilities without any cost to the athletes or their caregivers.
The aim is to enrich the lives of these athletes, enhancing their physical fitness, self-esteem, socialization skills, and preparing them to be productive and respected members of their communities.
For those wanting to help these inspiring athletes, visiting any participating Publix location during the campaign dates is the best way to contribute. Each donation strengthens the chances for reserved athletes to achieve their goals and experience the joy of sports.
