Thailand is facing significant challenges as public concerns about the economy deepen amid rising living costs. A recent survey conducted by Suan Dusit Poll revealed widespread anxiety among Thai citizens, as they navigate economic uncertainty and dissatisfaction with governmental responses to these pressing issues.
The survey, which took place from February 18 to 21, 2025, involved 1,141 participants and highlighted troubling trends. Notably, 51.01% of respondents reported increased caution in their spending habits, attributing this behavior to the soaring cost of living. Indeed, 82.94% of those surveyed believed the high prices were the primary factor affecting the Thai economy.
Concerns go beyond mere apprehension, as significant distrust toward the government's effectiveness emerged. A hefty 69.50% of respondents viewed current government measures as inadequate, urging swift action from Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and his administration to restore public confidence.
“This indicates the public's lack of confidence in the government's ability to tackle economic problems,” noted Ms. Pornphan Buathong, Chairwoman of Suan Dusit Poll. Her sentiment reflects the rising tide of disillusionment among the populace who are struggling with the harsh economic climate.
The political ramifications of this anxiety are evident, as 76.58% of the sample population expressed urgency for the government to address economic challenges,” added Assistant Professor Dr. Ekkonong Srisamrang, Chair of the Bachelor of Public Administration Program. This pressing demand for action signals the growing dissatisfaction with the government's capacity to manage everyday living costs effectively.
The anticipation of economic performance for the near future remains disheartening, as only 41.63% of respondents believed the fiscal situation would improve should former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra return to lead the country. With 46.01% of participants predicting the economy would remain stagnant or worsen, scepticism rises about the prospect for economic recovery.
This pervasive sense of uncertainty resonates through various segments of society. Even as the government attempts to inject funds and stimulate economic activity, many citizens struggle to maintain their purchasing power amid skyrocketing prices. The persistent disconnect between public expectations and governmental actions reflects the overarching sentiment of frustration among the populace.
Economists urge the government to focus on enhancing economic policies, emphasizing the need for strong, transparent communication with the public. Many people are clamoring for tangible improvements to their lives instead of vague promises.
“The government must improve economic policies and lead with urgency to restore confidence,” stressed Dr. Ekkonong Srisamrang. These words highlight not only the expectations faced by the government but also the discontent brewing among citizens who feel the ache of economic pressures daily.
While the administration has introduced financial support measures such as cash handouts aimed at stimulating the economy, many are skeptical about their effectiveness. The challenge lies not just in monetary interventions but also in repairing public trust. Many citizens regard these efforts as insufficient against the backdrop of persistent economic hardships.
Contributing factors to the economic dilemma include external pressures such as global inflationary trends and internal issues like market stagnation. With Thailand's economic future hanging in the balance, public pressure on Prime Minister Srettha’s administration is mounting.
It’s clear the road to revitalization will demand flexibility, foresight, and above all, openness from the government. Transparency and accountability could make all the difference and help silence the rising tide of dissatisfaction.
The ramifications of public discontent are significant. If left unaddressed, this atmosphere of uncertainty could lead to broader political consequences, including decreased support for the ruling party and increased calls for reform. Policymakers will need to work diligently and sincerely to rebuild trust, adapt to changing economic conditions, and respond to the needs of the citizens.
Thailand's economic recovery remains contingent upon the government’s capacity to implement effective policies and demonstrate responsiveness to public sentiment. The socioeconomic climate is ever-changing, necessitating proactive measures to address the concerns of citizens who are not only demanding immediate relief but also sustainable solutions for the future.
