Psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov Defends Against Allegations

Leaked chats stir controversy as trial over Maradona's death resumes

In a dramatic turn of events during the ongoing trial concerning the death of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona, Agustina Cosachov, his former psychiatrist, has found herself at the center of controversy following the revelation of private chats with psychologist Carlos Díaz. Cosachov has publicly defended herself, asserting that the messages were taken out of context and misinterpreted.

The chats, which came to light thanks to Verónica Ojeda, Maradona's ex-partner and mother of one of his children, include a provocative exchange that has raised eyebrows. In one message, Díaz asks Cosachov, "Te gar** al gordo, sinvergüenza!!!!", to which she responds, "Y bueno, jaja, terapia es terapia. Cada uno con su técnica, jaja". This exchange has been interpreted by some as an implication of an inappropriate relationship between Cosachov and Maradona.

Cosachov has vehemently denied any such allegations, stating, "It is absolutely false and profoundly unjust what is said about a supposed intimate relationship with my patient. I have never maintained, nor would I maintain, any relationship with a patient other than a strictly medical one." Her defense emphasizes that the messages were part of a private, sarcastic dialogue with a colleague, and she insists that they should not have been made public.

In her statement, Cosachov remarked, "I understand that this private dialogue, which should never have been made public, may lend itself to misinterpretation. But it is vital that it be understood that it was an intimate and informal conversation with a colleague." She pointed out that the messages date back to November 2020, a time when rumors of a romantic relationship with Maradona were circulating.

In a passionate plea, Cosachov stated, "We cannot continue to normalize humiliating language and media violence. I have tolerated many things in silence, but this time the pain and offense are too great to remain silent. Justice must be done. Without lies. Without manipulation. Without dirty play."

The trial concerning Maradona's death is set to resume on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, and is expected to continue until at least July. Cosachov, along with several other medical professionals, faces charges of simple homicide with eventual intent. This group includes neuro-surgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychologist Carlos Díaz, nurse Ricardo Omar Almirón, physician Pedro Pablo Di Spagna, coordinating physician Nancy Forlini, and head nurse Mariano Perroni.

During the trial, Ojeda testified about Maradona's final days and presented the chats that have now become a focal point of the proceedings. She described how Díaz expressed concern over her intentions to take Maradona to a different location, known as Country Abril, and how he attempted to manipulate his daughters against her to prevent the move. Mario Baudry, Ojeda's lawyer, revealed that Díaz allegedly said, "Se quiere llevar al Diego. Vamos a perder todo. Ahora llamo a las chicas (por Dalma y Gianinna) y la pudro para que se la agarren contra Ojeda, así no se lo lleva."

Ojeda expressed her lack of surprise at the contents of the chats, stating, "That is nothing. The outrageous things Díaz says about me..." The implications of these messages suggest a deeper concern regarding the professional conduct of those involved in Maradona's care.

Cosachov's defense attorney, Vadim Mischanchuk, reiterated that the conversations were meant to be ironic and that Cosachov did not engage in any personal relationship outside her professional duties. He emphasized that the context was crucial in understanding the nature of the exchanges.

As the trial continues, the focus on Cosachov's role as Maradona's treating physician is intensifying. Accusations have emerged that she made medical decisions outside her area of expertise, which may have contributed to the inadequate care Maradona received in his last days. This scrutiny adds a layer of complexity to the case, as the court seeks to determine the accountability of those involved in Maradona's medical treatment.

The upcoming sessions of the trial promise to delve deeper into the relationships and decisions made by the medical team overseeing Maradona's health, with the leaked chats serving as a pivotal piece of evidence. The outcome could have significant implications for the accused and the broader discourse surrounding celebrity health care and medical ethics.

In a society where the pressures of fame can complicate personal and professional boundaries, this case highlights the need for transparency and integrity in medical practices. As the trial unfolds, the public will be watching closely, hoping for clarity and justice in a situation that has become emblematic of the complexities surrounding celebrity culture and health care.
