PSG Edges Past Lens To Advance In French Cup

N'Zola's heroics overshadowed by penalty misses as PSG moves on to face Espaly.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) triumphed 4-3 on penalties against RC Lens, securing their place in the French Cup last 32 after the match ended 1-1 following extra time on Sunday. The game featured significant moments, including M'Bala Nzola's surprising goal for Lens and Gonçalo Ramos leveling the score for PSG, showcasing the drama and unpredictability of cup competitions.

Nzola drew first blood for Lens when he netted the ball past PSG's reserve goalkeeper Matvei Safonov at the 66th minute. This unexpected lead momentarily stunned the Parisians, who had displayed dominance throughout the match. The hosts, buoyed by the goal, seemed set to cause an upset. Yet, just four minutes later, Gonçalo Ramos responded for PSG, swiftly restoring parity and sending the match to penalties.

During the penalty shootout, both teams demonstrated their resolve, yet Nzola’s late miss became pivotal. Despite initially capturing the moment with his goal, Nzola's miss on the fourth penalty proved costly for Lens. Safonov then stepped up for PSG, saving Andy Diouf's attempt, solidifying PSG's victory.

“I’m happy. I don’t think I’m the man of the match. Stopping penalties is normal for a goalkeeper,” Safonov told beIN Sports after the match, downplaying his heroics. “It was tough game against very good team.” His remarks highlighted not only his role but also the intensity from the Lens side.

Reflecting on the match, PSG left-back Nuno Mendes acknowledged the challenges faced, stating, “We’re very happy with the win, but it wasn’t the match we wanted. We were level 1-1 after 90 minutes.” He added, “Yet we did well with the penalties. We’re leaving with the win, which is the most exciting thing. We’re going to rest and come back for 2025.”

The penalty shootout concluded with PSG’s side being flawless; their first four penalty takers scored successfully, securing their place for the next round. Mendes remained cautious about the upcoming match against fourth-tier Espaly, scheduled for January 14-16. “It will be a cup match and anything can happen, so we’ll have to be focused and give it our all,” he said, signaling respect for the competition’s capricious nature.

Overall, the match served as both a test and a triumph for PSG as they look ahead to their next challenge, reminding fans and players alike of the unpredictable spirit inherent within cup competitions. The blend of pressure, skill, and determination was on full display, heralding yet another exciting chapter for this storied club.
