PS5 Pro Struggles With Sales And Performance

Newly released console faces steep competition and performance critiques as sales lag behind PS4 Pro.

The PlayStation 5 Pro, which launched just months ago, is already facing challenging market conditions, as sales are reportedly lagging behind the PlayStation 4 Pro's pace. According to industry analyst Mat Piscatella, the executive director of games at market research firm Circana, this decline reflects broader trends within the gaming console market.

Piscatella's insights, shared via Bluesky, reveal troubling statistics showing console sales have taken a steep 35% tumble year-on-year, with overall gaming hardware spending dropping by 45% during the same period. The significant sales dip for the PS5 Pro, which he noted has fallen behind the sales rate of the PS4 Pro, signals shifting consumer behavior and expectations. "Sales of the PlayStation 5 Pro have fallen behind the pace of the PlayStation 4 Pro in the roughly three months since its release," Piscatella highlighted.

These figures are alarming for Sony, especially when considering Microsoft’s Xbox consoles faced even steeper declines, with hardware sales down 50%. Nintendo’s consoles also saw substantial reductions, with the Nintendo Switch falling 53% due to speculation surrounding its much-anticipated successor, the Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch soon.

Despite the PS5 Pro's rocky sales, it began with strong demand, priced at $699.99 / £699.99 / AU$1,199 without the disc drive or vertical stand, making it the priciest PlayStation console to date. Acknowledging this high entry price, several retailers have started offering discounts, hinting at possible future reductions. Comments from commentators reveal divided opinions on whether the prices could be adjusted significantly based on recent sales trends.

Performance-wise, the PS5 Pro is under scrutiny for not delivering consistently high frame rates across all titles, particularly with games like Monster Hunter Wilds experiencing frame drops and uneven performance. Digital Foundry previously recommended the game's "Prioritize Framerate" mode, but emphasized the significant loss of image quality on the standard PS5, characterizing it as "muddy." On the Pro, this mode performs substantially smoother but still lacks the crisp visuals one might expect from such advanced hardware.

Though this mode produces up to 60 frames per second, the PS5 Pro's versions of both "Balanced" and "Prioritize Resolution" settings show noticeable improvements over the base model, offering enhanced visual clarity and resolution, with ray tracing options adding depth to the graphics. Still, the consistent expectation of perfect performance remains unmet, highlighting the limitations of current gaming technologies.

Further compounding the PS5 Pro's challenges, some gameplay features suffer under the weight of demanding technical specifications. For example, GamerSyde outlined difficulties with the game's display modes where opting for the Resolution mode is supposed to hit 30FPS; yet, it often struggles to maintain this target. Users are forced to choose between lower resolution and frame rates or higher fidelity graphics settings, resulting in dissatisfaction. "Monster Hunter Wilds will require some updates before it reaches a point where performance can be considered stable," warned GamerSyde.

The apparent sales decline of the PS5 Pro and the inconsistent gaming experiences it provides may mirror uncertain future demand. All indications point toward consumers remaining hesitant about investing heavily at this price point, especially with competing consoles attracting interest. The situation will certainly evolve as companies weigh public feedback against market expectations, potentially leading to valuable sales and performance adjustments.

With the PS5 Pro being the latest offering from Sony, which aimed to attract dedicated gaming enthusiasts, the combination of extended high pricing, underwhelming performance for some flagship titles, and falling sales could shift industry dynamics. If discount strategies are employed alongside hardware adjustments, the PS5 Pro might yet reach profitability as it navigates this tumultuous market climate.
