Provence Weather Turns Unsettled Amid Heavy Rain Forecasts

March 10 marks the beginning of continued rain and turbulent conditions across Provence and much of France.

The weather forecast for the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region indicates significant disturbances for the week of March 10, 2025, with meteorologists warning of continuous rain and cloudy skies. According to Paul Marquis from La Météo du 13, the weather has taken a turn for the worse since Sunday, March 9, bringing back clouds and scattered rain expected throughout the week.

Marseille, along with surrounding cities such as Toulon, Aix-en-Provence, and Avignon, will particularly feel the impact of this week’s unsettled weather, characterized as "agitated and dull" with numerous rainy spells and temperatures hovering around seasonal norms. "This agitated weather could last at least another week," Marquis cautions.

Remarkably, March 2025 is already exceeding average rainfall levels for the Bouches-du-Rhône department, with measurements indicating over 44.6mm of rain recorded at the Marignane station—an increase of 51% above normal for this time of year. Venelles, Aubagne, and Salon-de-Provence also registered substantial precipitation amounts of over 40mm. These figures suggest the rainfall totals could double or even triple as the week progresses, bringing adverse effects to the area.

On March 9, the region's winds compounded the already tricky conditions. Paul Marquis reported numerous damages due to violent east winds affecting the Bouches-du-Rhône, with gusts recorded at over 120km/h at Bec-de-l'Aigle, 105km/h at Trets, and around 100km/h at Marseille. Such high winds raised concerns about potential hazards for residents.

Across France, the same unsettled weather conditions were present, with heavy clouds and rain covering much of the country. On March 10, forecasts indicated temperatures between 9 °C and 14 °C throughout France, particularly across regions like Brittany, Normandy, and Île-de-France, where cloud cover persisted. The Côte d'Azur was also slated for showers.

Notably, temperatures were expected to rise slightly on March 11, reaching about 13 °C, thanks to the southeast wind blowing at 20km/h. Light drizzle is anticipated during the afternoon, with the evening bringing more rain. The general trend suggests sustained rainy days for the latter part of the week, with average temperatures settling around 11 °C.

The weather for the week beginning March 10 was predicted to be even less favorable than the previous days. Much of the nation could expect rain; according to reports, Tarbes found itself under storm warnings as other parts basked under sunny skies. On March 12, 2025, it was expected to clear somewhat along the southern coast, with temperatures reaching 14 °C, but light rain was forecasted for the north.

Looking forward to March 13, French meteorologists anticipate continual rain across various regions, possibly leading to some areas experiencing temperatures below 10 °C. The rainfall could pose significant challenges, especially with earlier predictions indicating accumulations of 100 to 200 mm of rain expected, particularly impacting the Cévennes region and reaching 30 to 50 mm as the storm progressed through the PACA region.

Friday, March 14, 2025, is projected to continue the pattern of rain and showers, except for some areas such as Perpignan, which might see occasional sunshine with temperatures around 14 °C. The overall trend suggests significant rainfall will remain until relief appears during the weekend of March 15-16, when the sun is expected to return partially.

Weather conditions might also bring surprises; for example, March 16 could see snowfalls expected overnight in certain northern regions like Bourg-Saint-Maurice and Gap, though significant accumulations of rain will affect much of France, overshadowing the sun's return. It is advised for residents to prepare for the worst as adverse weather may lead to challenges within the local infrastructure and daily life.

With this week of unsettled weather underway, residents and travelers are encouraged to stay informed and plan accordingly as the weather continues to play tricks on expectations.
