Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation, stated, “A file of evidence has now been submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service and our team continues to make enquiries, with support from prosecutors. We will thoroughly and properly investigate sexual offences as part of our commitment to making London safer for women and girls.”
The inquiries originated from a joint investigation conducted by the BBC and The Guardian which revealed detailed accounts from women alleging inappropriate conduct by Westwood. It was noted by the police spokespersons and various reports, including the findings shared throughout 2022, detailing how the allegations cover numerous years of his career, indicating potential patterns of misconduct.
According to the Met Police, this investigation is particularly complex and sensitive. The authorities emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the investigation and supporting any potential victims coming forward. Reports emerged last month indicating the BBC had spent over £3 million on this review, which has yet to be released due to potential risks of interfering with the police investigation. This all follows Westwood's decision to step away from his role at Capital Xtra, where he had been broadcasting prior to the allegations coming to light amid increased public attention on his conduct.
