On February 4, 2025, the DSI's Computational Privacy Group hosted a significant meetup for privacy experts intersecting the fields of machine learning and data privacy at Imperial College London. The event attracted over 100 privacy experts from across London and beyond to address the latest developments and share their ideas on protecting privacy within the increasingly sophisticated world of AI.

During the meetup, participants engaged with insightful presentations from leading researchers specializing in various facets of privacy within machine learning. Notably, Graham Cormode from the University of Warwick discussed "Federated Computation for Private Data Analysis," exploring innovative methods to safeguard data during analysis. Lukas Wutschitz from Microsoft presented on “Empirical privacy risk estimation in LLMs,” offering insights on risks associated with large language models. Jamie Hayes, representing Google DeepMind, unveiled findings on “Stealing User Prompts from Mixture-of-Experts models,” exposing vulnerabilities within AI systems. Lastly, Ilia Shumailov also from Google DeepMind addressed the pivotal question: “What does it mean to operationalize privacy?” The invaluable discussions during this meetup emphasized the substantial need for rigorous privacy measures as AI continues to evolve.

On the other side of the pond, privacy scrutiny tightened as Canadian Privacy Commissioner, Philippe Dufresne, launched an investigation on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to assess compliance with Canadian privacy law concerning personal information handling.

The inquiry, initiated on February 27, 2025, seeks to determine whether X adequately safeguards the collection, use, and dissemination of Canadian users’ personal information, particularly as it relates to training AI models. Following Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter and its transformation to X, xAI introduced Grok, its AI chatbot, which recently rolled out Grok-3 to compete with established models from DeepSeek and OpenAI.

Generative AI models, such as Grok, require vast amounts of data to function efficiently. While Grok-3 is reported to improve user experience, concerns have arisen about the ethical ramifications of using Canadians’ data—potentially influencing political decisions and exacerbated by the increasing reliance on AI for content generation. Commissioner Dufresne's authority stems from the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), which governs personal data collection and disclosure practices. His office is tasked with conducting independent investigations of complaints related to private organizations under PIPEDA.

The investigation was prompted by complaints from Member of Parliament Brian Masse, who expressed worries about X utilizing Canadians’ data to advance AI applications potentially affecting users' political views. The New Democratic Party responded to the situation by underscoring the necessity of transparency and accountability, particularly pertaining to algorithms used on X.

This investigation emerges amid mounting tensions between Canada and the US, sparked by trade disputes and taxes on digital services affecting American tech giants. Growing concerns over privacy violations reflect wider societal unease as AI technologies rapidly evolve.

Meanwhile, the tech industry continues to grapple with employee surveillance issues as well. A new productivity monitoring software dubbed Dystopian has captured attention and incited fears among workers. Developed to track minute operational details, this tool creates detailed productivity graphs and can suggest terminations based on performance metrics.

A Reddit user recently shared their experience during a presentation on the software, which monitors worker activities across various parameters. “The application tracks mouse movements, logs activity, captures desktop screenshots at intervals, and monitors all programs opened on the computer,” they reported, highlighting the intrusive nature of the software.

Critics of Dystopian are voicing serious concerns about privacy and the ethical lines being blurred between employee monitoring and trust. Proponents argue such tools can significantly boost productivity, but opponents fear they could erode the employer-employee relationship, creating an oppressive environment where workers feel watched and vulnerable.

The barrage of privacy issues surrounding AI emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive regulations to protect individuals' rights. Events such as the Computational Privacy Group's meetup and investigations like those undertaken by the Canadian Privacy Commissioner are central to fostering necessary dialogue and advocating for effective policies.
