Princeton Baseball Claims First Ivy League Win Over Dartmouth

Tigers triumph in home opener as Nick Shenefelt shines at the plate.

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton University baseball team celebrated a hard-fought victory against the Dartmouth Big Green, marking their first Ivy League win of the season during their home opener at Clarke Field on March 22, 2025. The Tigers, coming off a challenging start to their season, looked to build on their momentum as they squared off against an equally determined Dartmouth squad.

Freshman standout Nick Shenefelt showcased his talent, hitting a remarkable 3-for-4 and falling just one home run shy of completing the cycle. Shenefelt's performance was instrumental in setting the tone for the game. He initiated the scoring in the bottom of the third inning with a sacrifice fly that brought in the first run for Princeton. The Tigers quickly took an early lead that energized the home crowd.

However, Dartmouth responded valiantly, tying the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning. The Big Green's equalizer came as they settled into a rhythm, making it clear they were not going to make it easy for the Tigers. But Princeton quickly regained the upper hand when Caden Shapiro touched home once more, driven in by Jake Bold’s first triple of the season. The offensive surge continued, with Jake Kernodle reaching first base and Shenefelt contributing with a single that allowed Bold to cross the plate and pushed the Tigers ahead to a solid 4-1 lead.

The excitement didn't stop there, as Dartmouth’s resilience showed in the sixth inning. The Big Green rallied and put together three runs in the inning; two of these runs were unearned, which added to Princeton's challenge. Tigers' starting pitcher Andrew D'Alessio, after an admirable 6.0 innings on the mound, allowed three earned runs while striking out two batters, ending his day after a commendable performance.

Responding to the Big Green’s comeback, Princeton quickly got back in the game with a powerful showing in the sixth inning. Kernodle delivered an impressive RBI base hit, and Shenefelt once again made an impact with an RBI double, bringing the score to 6-5. The Tigers were determined not to let the lead slip away again and fought fiercely down the stretch.

As the game progressed, Princeton added crucial insurance runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. Reliever Justin Kim came into the game to close it out, successfully recording his first save of the season. Kim’s performance on the mound was key in ensuring the Tigers walked away with the victory.

However, the day wasn't without its complications. The second game of the doubleheader was halted due to darkness in the top of the twelfth inning, which left fans eagerly anticipating the conclusion of that match. The resumption is scheduled for March 23, 2025, and further coverage is expected to follow.

With their first Ivy League victory secured, the Princeton Tigers look to build on this momentum as they continue their season. The combination of solid pitching and a potent offense could set the stage for a thrilling season ahead, with fans hopeful for what’s next for this determined team.
