Prime Minister Modi Celebrates Diwali With Troops And Citizens

Festive spirit blends with government initiatives as traditions uphold national pride

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Diwali celebrations this year were marked by his longstanding tradition of spending the festival with the armed forces. On October 31, 2024, Modi visited the Lakki Nala area of Sir Creek, located near the India-Pakistan border, to celebrate with personnel from the Border Security Force (BSF), Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Sir Creek is known for its harsh and inhospitable conditions, with its extreme temperatures and challenging terrain making it one of the more unwelcoming regions of India. Despite these challenges, the region holds significant strategic importance, prompting strong military presence to safeguard national interests.

Modi's visit to the BSF outpost was more than just ceremonial. During his interaction with the soldiers, he exchanged Diwali greetings and emphasized the role of the armed forces as the protectors of the nation’s dreams. “Today, as we move quickly toward the goal of developed India, you all are protectors of this dream,” Modi stated.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the armed forces are equipped with modern resources, stating, "We will never compromise on even an inch of our land." This emphasis on territorial integrity resonates deeply within the military community, reflecting the government's alignment with the resolve of the armed forces.

Since taking office in 2014, Modi has made it a yearly ritual to celebrate Diwali with military personnel at various locations throughout the country. This year marks his tenth consecutive Diwali dedicated to the soldiers, having previously celebrated the festival at locations such as Siachen and Kargil.

The Prime Minister began his day by paying floral tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at the Statue of Unity, coinciding with the birth anniversary of India's first home minister, which is also commemorated as National Unity Day.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, on the same day, troops from both India and China engaged in the friendly tradition of exchanging sweets at various border locations, including the Line of Actual Control (LAC). This exchange came on the heels of recent troop disengagement at friction points, indicating potential thawing relations between the two nations.

Meanwhile, Modi's government has also been proactive in gifting the citizens of India for Diwali. The introduction of the Free Gas Cylinder Scheme aims to provide free gas cylinders to poor and middle-class families, contributing to efforts to promote clean fuel use and health benefits, particularly for women who often face the hazards of smoke from traditional cooking methods.

This initiative is part of the broader Ujjwala Yojana, which has benefited millions by providing clean cooking fuel to households across the nation. With this new scheme, eligible families will receive not only free gas cylinders but also complimentary gas stoves and initial connection materials.

The scheme seeks to improve living conditions across the country, especially for families living below the poverty line. To qualify, applicants must meet specific criteria, including age requirements and income brackets. Necessary documentation includes information like Aadhaar cards, BPL certificates, and income proofs.

The festive spirit, combined with these government initiatives, highlights how the Modi administration aims to strengthen both national pride through military acknowledgment and the welfare of its citizens through social programs. This dual approach showcases the government's commitment to both security and social equity during the festive season.
