NEXCO Central Japan has announced preventive closures on various expressways due to forecasted heavy snowfall from March 4 to March 5, 2025. This decision aims to mitigate large-scale vehicle congestion resulting from the impact of weather fronts and low-pressure systems.
The closures are expected to take place during the afternoon and evening hours on March 4, 2025. Specifically, from 15:00 to 21:00, the Tomei Expressway is set to close between the Tokyo Interchange (IC) and Yaizu IC, affecting both directions of travel. Similarly, the Shin-Tomei Expressway will also see closures during this timeframe between Suruga Bay Numazu Junction (JCT) and Shin-Qinoko IC, among other segments.
Additional impacted routes include the Chubu Odan Expressway, the Shin Shonan Bypass, and the Nishi-Shoan Bypass, with commuters advised to plan alternative routes during the expected closure periods. The Chuo Expressway will be disrupted from 18:00 on March 4 until midnight, as will the Higashi-Fuji Five Lakes Road, which will close after 18:00.
NEXCO urges the public to exercise caution and restrict unnecessary travel during these weather conditions. "To protect lives, please refrain from outdoor activities. If you must use the expressways, please be prepared for wide detours," the company advised.
The weather pattern is anticipated to bring significant snowfall which may impact road safety across affected motorways. NEXCO is monitoring the situation closely and will apply necessary updates as conditions evolve.
Residents and travelers are encouraged to stay informed on weather developments and heed road signage or advisories issued by transportation authorities. Efficient traffic management is key to reducing risks associated with severe weather driving conditions. Safety takes precedence as officials prepare for potentially hazardous road experiences amid heavy snowfall and consequent closures.
NEXCO Central Japan is committed to ensuring the safety of all roadway users during adverse weather and will continue to collaborate with local agencies to manage the effects of these predicted conditions effectively.
Updated information on expressway operations can be found on the NEXCO Central Japan website or through their customer service centers. Road users are reminded to always drive cautiously, maintain safe distances from other vehicles, and follow posted speed limits and advisories.
